for 9am ferry go ahead and fly
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We just returned from PR on Sat. We also thought we could buy tickets ahead and ride ferry over to Culebra on Thurs. Arrived on Wed. afternoon to buy tickets, but they said only way to get tickets was to be in line no later than 4:30am. I have 11 yr. old daughter so we bite the bullet and flew Air Flamenco Thurs. morning. We only had 4 and they need 6 to fly but had 3 more guys come in who did go by ferry at 7 and said line was over a mile long. This was mid week so I can only imagine on a weekend. Dispite all our reading on the posts about the ferry, we thought it could not be that bad, but it is so go ahead and fly especially for the 9.

The ferries are VERY crowded in July/August & on holiday weekends. At other times of the year an hour in advance is sufficient.

When guests (who want to take the ferry) book with us in advance for these time periods we will purchase the r/t ferry tix & mail them to them, thus eliminating the hassle.

We returned on the 6:30AM ferry this past Saturday from Vieques to Fajardo. I bought tickets on Wednesday and got there on Sat at 5:45. There were probably over 200 people already in line to board the boat. We got on with no problems, but Fajardo was a literal zoo with lines winding for blocks. Our taxi driver, Joel' was right there with his sign and he got us to SJU in less than an hour. I am glad we flew from IG when we arrived in PR over to Culebra. It cost more, but was well worth the added expense vs the ferry.

Culebra is fascinating.

When I go to Culebra this coming December (3rd through 17th, both are Wednesdays), there will probably be a handful of people on the ferry. I bet that 80-90% of the seats will be empty.

Other times of the year, the lines wind around for blocks. Fortunately, there are very few times when this happens (late June through Labor day, and all the usual holiday periods).

For all those who are planning a trip to Culebra.... Just use Disneyland as a measure. Would you go to Disneyland in July or August and expect no lines? How about Christmas? Easter?

On the other hand, how about late September? October? Late January?

I've been to Disneyland in September when most of the Pirates of the Caribbean boats were completely empty... only one out of five boats had anyone in it at all. And I've been there during Thanksgiving... horrendous lines for everything.

Same thing applies to Culebra.

So if you're hoping to go to a secluded, undeveloped, spectacularly beautiful island, you've found the right one in Culebra. Just be sure to pick the right time of year!

Sometimes, there isn't really have a choice due to family availability. So just be prepared, like Vicki.
