rental car fro SJ to culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

How difficult is it to take a rental car from the SJ airport across the ferry to Culebra? We fly in on Wed at 215pm...then we have to get to Fajarado which sounds a bit crazy. It seems like taking a taxi is about the same price as a flight. The public bus sounds cheap but I have no idea how reliable or easy this is to use to get to Fajardo? It is only like 40 miles on mapquest, but seems to take 2-3 hours by car/taxi. Is this truly correct? If so, how long would the public bus ride to Fajardo take? Does anyone have any idea what the cost is to take a rental car over to calebra on the ferry? Taking a car over would be chaper than taking flights each way the renting a culebra car or taking taxi to ferry then renting a culebra car, and bringing over a SJ rental would allow us to bring our dive stuff w/o weight restrictions. Also, do we need to reserve mid-week ferry tickets in the month of March or is this ok because it isn't super high season? Any thoughts? I appreciate your help.

Takes 50-60 minutes to drive from SJU to Fajardo.

I've heard that you have to reserve a spot for a passenger car months in advance. It's not a good option, to say the least.

The second half of March is indeed super high season. It's Easter, probably the most crowded time of the entire year.

There have been some very extensive threads on all this in the past few weeks. It will be worth your while to spend some time going over them.

Check with the rental company before you take their cars on the ferry (or search this forum); I believe it is not allowed under the rental contracts. The cargo ferry is not reliable for the casual visitor - supply trucks, i.e., gasoline, food and trucks delivering construction supplies, etc. take priority, and even if you have a reservation, you could get bumped.

Happy Diving!
