There don't seem to be many divers on this board, or else I'd let someone with experience on Culebra jump in and answer first. We're going there in a couple months to do some diving, and I've been hanging out on this board getting information about the island.

culebradivers.com shows full NAUI certification at $495 ($445 home study), and universal referral open water dives $300.

culebradiveshop.com is a PADI shop, $450 certification, $295 referral

When are you planning to go?

We will be there March 19, 20, & 21 before heading off to the BVIs -- so we'll just barely miss you! The referral program is where you do your classroom & pool work back home, and then do your 4 or 5 "checkout" dives in Culebra. You get a referral form from your home dive shop saying that you've completed all of the certification except the open water dives. The price of the classroom/pool work varies, but it typically is around $200-300. It's really a matter of whether you'd like to get all the "academic" stuff done at home, rather than taking vacation time to do it.

We got certified a year ago and it was the best thing I've ever done. We did classroom/pool work at home and went to Key Largo for checkout dives.

Culebra Divers (at the ferry dock) is the best place to get certified, but Angie's right, you might want to do your NAUI classwork and pool dives at home, and then bring a referral form to Walter and Monika at Culebra Divers for your open water certification. Walter is excellent with students and new divers - you will not regret doing your open water dives with him. Hotel Kokomo is right on the ferry dock, and there is currently lots of road construction going on there. You might consider Villa Boheme instead. I have never personally stayed at Kokomo, but have stayed at Villa Boheme. It is sparse, but clean, and within walking distance of restaurants, shops and diving.

Happy Diving!
Debbie
