Good or Bad?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

the Washington Post did a big travel piece on the Caribbean today (Sunday) PR in general got a lot of mentions, Vieques one, Culebra nothing.

I want the businesses there to thrive and the people to prosper, but a part of me feels smug that it's still "under the radar"

I have enormous gratitude that Culebra is not mentioned in big travel pieces. In the late 1970's, I stayed inexpensively many weeks on St. Barths with my young daughter upstairs at le Select; we were the only persons most days on anse de cays (Feb/March) which would be impossible today.

Owlihoot,

How does Culebra compare to St. Barth's in the 70's? From sailing buddies I hear it is somewhat similar with a different cultural premisse.

Enjoy Culebra!

a co-worker who had been around the area in the late 70's - early 80's said Culebra was the most like what she remembered the Virgin Islands were in those days. I think as long as there's never a deep-water berth (cruise ships) it will stay more or less the same.

But yes! more stories about what we've missed!

There was the boating aspect, from coming upon and sailing with friends on a 30 ft. Maine wooden Pinky schooner to having my older child rendezvous with us on the island after sailing for 2 months as crew on a 70' S & S. When initially sailing into Gustavia, we saw a beef critter being butchered, hung beside the Cay; it's head floated in the water. My daughter and I could safely hitch rides, at times there was no one on the beach but us (all day long), the shopkeepers (few that there were) were friendly and helpful and fellow travelers gathered informally without drowning in booze ...to wander the island, to share stories on into the night, and to just relax. I worked/cooked for crew one week for the Barnes family on their inter-island freighter, going to Fajardo for fresh fruit and vegetables; it was heaven to have a kitchen as le Select rooms were rooms only with a slow fan. At night it was a bit noisy but no live music then as I remember.
Michael, tell us about the different cultural premise.

Well the sailing part is very similar. I do not know of any other place where there are people from 28' ers hanging out on 70' boats - as I have experienced and seen in Culebra many times.

Culturally different: French versus Spanish.

But I do not know how the French were down island 30 years ago. 7 years ago (and I speak somewhat fluent albeit accened French) I felt looked down upon, which never happened to me in Spanish 'down island' places.

Enjoy Culebra!

Not withstanding language differences, in the past I also took fear into travel situations as I have always lived in rural northern climes that are 99 1/2 % pure white. I was unaware of being looked down. In campground this year as I tried to give a (wasp stung) young woman (who only spoke spanish) white vinegar which had taken away my pain from a wasp sting, we both seemed to iexpress regret to not communicate.
