Theft... be smart.
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Just a heads up... though I loved Culebra and had a fantastic time on our trip, it was a bummer to have been robbed (for the first time ever!) while we snorkeled off Tamarindo Beach. We had been on the island 4 days and had carried our wallet, cameras, cell phones, room key, etc with us everywhere and left our valuables in our bags hung in the trees or on our towels on the beach while we snorkeled. On this particular day, we'd decided to only take a little cash for lunch and the "carros publicos" ride, and stored it in two separate places in our backpacks. When we finished a glorious day of snorkeling, we hopped in the vans to return to the hotel, but when we went to pay the fare we discovered the $35 we'd carried had been stolen (but not the camera or cell phone!).

We'd heard another guest at our hotel talking about having lost her hand purse at Flamenco Beach and when it was returned, the $180 in cash that she had for her vacation was gone. Everything else was there. Cash is king everywhere I guess.

All this to say... no matter what paradise looks like, you still have to be vigilent.
Don't let this stop you from enjoying this beautiful place!

We stayed in Casa Pueblo which I would highly recommend. During our week of October 15th and had a little excitement there. We came home one afternoon to discover cop cars outside the place. After talking with the police I was informed that some of the school kids decided to take a little dip in the pool on the premises. They did not enter the building but I dont know what would have happened if we wouldnt have locked it. We were missing $20 from my wifes pants which were drying on the porch. It really wasnt worth it to us to report anything as it would be a lost cause...they did catch the little villians and the parents were called. From what I understand this was a rare occurance. I would still recommend locking important items and not taking anything to the beach which cannot be replaced.

In June of 2006 we had our digital camera stolen out of our rental car-one of Dick's VW things. We were parked right outside of the hospital in daylight. We wrote it off to a crime of opportunity but it definately damped our experience. We had lost the photos and videos from the first five days of our vacation. We reported it to the police but nothing ever became of it. This did not ruin our trip and we will still go back...just be more careful with what you consider valuable.

Here's a little trick I use.

Bring as little as possible to the beach.

If you need to leave any valuables behind
stash them in a large ziplock bag (I bring them
along from home). Put your wallets and small
digital cameras in the ziplock and bury it in the sand.
Put a rock on the spot so you know were to dig.

I've even left my camera bag covered with leaves and
litter in the bushes behind the beach. So far, so good.

Peter,

Those are my tactics as well.

Maybe it is the car being driven? *Tourist* rental cars tend to stand out...I might have a word with Carlos about that front license plate!
