1st Time in Puerto Rico & Culebra, help? ^_^
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

I'm planning on taking a trip to Puerto Rico and ran across numerous recommendations for Flamenco Beach and the island of Culebra. We're only planning on going for a 3-4 day trip (in total), so a few questions:

1. Where would you recommend staying in Puerto Rico, to make it easy to reach Culebra Island and the Flamenco Beach? I have zero knowledge of Puerto Rico, so the "Getting There" section is all Greek to me (^_^;), sorry.

Is there a section of Puerto Rico that's "closer" to how I need to get to Culebra? Or is the whole island small enough that any place we stay in PR is fine?

2. So, are the only 2 ways to get to Culebra from Puerto Rico: Either a Car Ferry (so you have to rent a car), or a flying in? Is there just a standard boat trip for non-driving visitors? :)

3. Flamenco Beach is the key place I want to visit. Is a One-Day (go in the morning, come back to Puerto Rico at night), good enough? Or would you recommend more time?

Thanks for any help in advance! :)

Best regards,

Ken

Well let's see if I can help you:

There are passenger ferries and cargo ferries that also carry passengers throughout the day. If you click on the transport section of this web page and then ferry schedule, you'll find good planning info.

If you want to go to Culebra and Flamenco Beach for the day, I recommend that you stay overnight the night before in Fajardo (NE corner of PR) That's where the ferry leaves from. Getting from San Juan to Culebra, look up Travel by Padin on the web. Depending on your budget, you might want to look at the Fajardo Inn or the El Conquistador. Once you get to Culebra, there are publico's (shared taxis/buses) that will take you out to the beach for $2.00 per person. If you just want to spend the day at Flamenco, you won't need a car. - If you want to explore some of the other great beaches, e.g. Zoni, etc., you'll want a car. You can rent one on Culebra.

It's hard to say whether one day is enough....very personal decision

Hope this helps.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. To clarify, I meant:

* The mini-vacation to Puerto Rico will be 4 days long. I was just checking to see if 1 of those days would be enough to devote to seeing Flamenco Beach on Culebra, or if I should leave more time (^_^).

It's my first time to Puerto Rico in general, so I wanted to balance it out and see as much as I could without overwhelming myself :).

As a follow-up,

* How long is the Boat Ride (passenger-version) to Calebra from Puerto Rico?

And is it pretty rock steady? My brother gets seasick easily (^_^;). Or would you recommend a plane ride?

Thanks!

The boat ride is about 1 1/2 hours. It can be very rough. You can take a plane from Fajardo to Culebra & back. Another option is to fly to Culebra from San Juan. Check Isla Nena (airline) for times, etc. I think Vieques Air Link also flies to Culebra but I'm not sure. I use "SeaBands" for sea sickness.
