Just back from Culebra

My boyfriend and I just got back from our first trip to Culebra. We loved it, and because this website was so helpful for us, I thought I'd return the favor and put my two-sense in.

Food: We loved loved loved Juanita Bananas (went there twice in a row). Do not miss out on this restaurant. Atmosphere to match the incredible food! The food at the Shipwreck Bar at Bahia Marina was pretty good too, and the atmosphere is worth the trip alone. Not such high marks for Dinghy Dock. The dinner was gross and overpriced, and the service was horrible. Slightly better for lunch, but would not be on the top of my list. We also went to Mamacita's for dinner one night and really enjoyed it as well. TIP: Put your name on the list early because they dont take reservations, and we couldnt get in there our first night. Lastly, for lunch we went to El Eden and had the most delicious sandwiches made for us that we took to the beach. They have an amazing wine and liquor selection there too, and the people who own it were so nice.

Car rental: Went with Carlos Jeep Rental. Found them to be professional and extremely easy and quick to deal with.

Accommodation: We stayed at the Culebra Lighthouse, unit #2. It was fine, and there was Direct TV (we had one rainy day and were fortunate to have something to watch all day!). Ok location...just above the airport, and not too far of a walk into town. In retrospect, I probably would have stayed closer to town, but really it wasnt too bad.

We had a great time doing absolutely nothing except eating and relaxing on the beach! Would definitely return!!

I appreciate your comments and I give high marks to Barbara Rosa's food and ambiance; fair prices and good cross-talk with other diners. All groceries we needed were available at Superette Mayra; we also shopped the 'stand' near the airport on successive Thurs. & Fri.
Camping for 3 weeks was again such a pleasure; especially meeting new folks from around North America and renewing talk with others met previously at Flemenco and in Maine.
Hiking above Flemenco, trying to catch a trail to Resaca was hot and an added pleasure was meeting and talking with conservationists and volunteers. I learned from one young man who's presently an agricultural student, what varieties of foods are grown on the main island and where and how they are grown.
As a grandparent, I also appreciated the presence and diversity of many children. This gives me ideas for my future camping on Culebra.

Many thanks for this forum.
