Car Ferry to Culebra?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm trying to plan a March trip to Puerto Rico and Culebra for myself, my wife and our two boys, ages 5 and 8. I would be grateful for any advice, especially regarding the following questions:

-How easy/difficult is it to use the car ferry from Fajardo to Culebra? We will likely be on the main island of Puerto Rico for a couple of days with a rental car before coming to Culebra, and I’m trying to figure out the best logistics. I know that we could arrange to rent a car on Culebra, but I didn’t really want to have to drive back to San Juan, turn in our car, take a taxi to Fajardo then ferry to Culebra.
-Does the car ferry run reliably more or less on schedule?
-If I make a reservation in advance for the car ferry, can I count on them having a spot for our car?
-How rough is the ride typically?

I may not be thinking as creatively as possible, so if anyone has alternative ideas of how we might best get there, please tell me. Unfortunately, round-trip airfare from San Juan for four is really beyond our budget.

Thanks very much for your consideration. Best wishes to all.

We were on the beautiful island of Culebra over Christmas. We rented from Avis in San Juan and left it in Fajardo. Renting a jeep on the island is the way to go. There was much roadwork/construction going on in the downtown area. Flying over from Fajardo and all the way back to San Juan cost our family of 5 $300. We thought it was well worth it. We had some wild weather while on the island, and the ferry was canceled the morning we were to fly out. Luckily we had a BEAUTIFUL and SMOOTH flight with Vieques AirLInk. If you do a search of TRIP REPORT, I may cover some of your questions, or feel free to email me. Enjoy your trip!

Eric- If you read my other post, you can see that your family and my family are in the same predictament. My husband and I are planning on spending a couple of days in San Juan whether it is on the front end of the trip or the back end. We are trying to consider if we need a car for just touring around Old San Juan. Does anyone have suggestions for renting a car?

Then we are trying to figure our how to get to Culebra Island. I came across "Padin's Taxi Service" that will pick you up at the airport in San Juan and take you to the Culebra ferrry. The website is www.enchanted-isle.com/padin/

An idea is to go to Culebra island first and then rent a car in Fajardo and drive back to San Juan.

Someone else may want to respond and let us know if they had a positive experience with Padins Taxi service.

Have you done any research for hotels in San Juan? If you find something interesting will you let me know? I will do the same for you. Thanks!

Our experience with Padin's taxi service was most positive. They proved to us they can be counted on to meet you when and where they say they will. Our plane was not on time and did not come in to the terminal it was scheduled to, but there they were, quite faithful.
We began very casual and friendly but when it was established that we had an impossibly tight connection to get the ferry, driver Jose became the hero of the day and began a 40-minute lesson in Latin driving skills. I have driven in many countries and in the largest and most daunting cities, New York, Bangkok, Mexico, Montreal, Rome, London and think myself to be a courageous and competent driver. Jose is far more inventive and determined. He and his faithful sidekick got us to the ferry on time with lots of laughs. Our return trip was without time constraints and Jose was a totally different driver now being unhurried, courteous, and respectful of the rules of the road.
Padin proved they can adapt to the situation and can be relied upon. One of our much-told "post vacation" stories.

I just booked the car ferry by calling 787-801-0250 and it cost $26.50 round trip.
