Alcohol on Flamenco Beach
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Just curious, I was suprised to see that there was no alcohol served on Flamenco Beach or the little bar at Culebra Beach Villas. Any particular reason???

Thanks Jorge from Miami

My guess is there's not much market for it, as the Puerto Ricans bring cases of beer over for their camping trips. Bet they could make a buck selling it to the North American turistas that didn't come prepared. :)

Happy Diving!

To serve alcohol, a very expensive license is needed...with all the other outlets on Culebra selling, I doubt it would be worth it to the vendors; plus, no glass is allowed on any of the beaches, which would a)limit what could be sold in a serious way and b)add to the plastic trash.
These aren't *official* reasons, but just seem possible to me!

The beach has operated without a liquor license all this time and will continue to prosper. Most of the locals bring their own canned beer for extended stays inn the campsite. When I visit Culebra I usually stay at Casa Enseneda. They provide me a small cooler which I then fill up with ice and six cans of beer for my daily treck to Flamenco. I place the empty cans in the garbage can just before I leave. I think if they sold beer on the beach it would increase the amount of garbage placed into the garbage cans and could lead to unrully behavior caused by underaged drinking.

I thought I was able to buy a beer there the first time I went, what, 7-8 years ago? For sure I had a sangria in May of '05, because they had no other drinks.

The last people to run Coconuts, Willy and Vilma, moved on to other things. I loved going out there, because I felt like a tourist, far from the everyday vacation I'm usually on.
No doubt someone will take up the torch again sometime...Vilma did make a killer sangria. The only one better I've had is when Bartender Steve at Dinghy Dock makes his white sangria...ask him and maybe he'll whip up a batch. It's a seriously deliecious fruity meal in a glass and very very very dangerous.
