1st time to Culebra

I came upon this website last night and thought this would be the best place to get honest opinions. My husband and I are planning a trip to Puerto Rico in June. We have never been to the Carribean. We thought about St. Johns, but the flights are too expensive. So, we have decided on Puerto Rico. We want to spend a day or two in Old San Juan, but really want to relax on the island of Culebra.

Here are a few questions we have:
1. Is there enough to do on the island for 5 full days. Any suggestions on the best activities?
2. Can you take a ferry/boat to St. Thomas for the day? If so, do you know who to call and a approx. price?
3. What about accomodations. We have looked at many on-line, but would like to get your opinon. We prefer to be right on the beach and maybe with a pool, if all possible.
4. Do you need to rent a car or can you get by without one?

Hi,

I've been to Culebra many times and I'll do my best to try to answer some of your questions.

1) Culebra is very quiet. Some things that are great to do: Snorkle, swim, hike, rent a kayak, take a water taxi to Culebrita, go fishing, etc. We generally stay for two weeks at a time and even that's not long enough. It all depends on how active you need to be.

2) There is no ferry to St Thomas. However, I believe that you can rent a boat and crew for a trip. (I don't know from whom)

3) If you want a nice place directly on the beach, I recommend Flamenco Beach Villa. (787-742-0023) They only rent by the week in the winter. I'm not sure about summer minimums. Tamarindo has a pool but no sandy beach. They are directly on the water with a dock. Club Seabourne has a pool.

4) You don't really need a car, but if you are staying at Flamenco, it's about 2 1/2 miles to town. There are publicos that run daily for $2.00 per person or you can call a cab.

I went with my husband last April and had many of the same concerns epsecially regarding the pool. If you stay on Flamenco beach you will have a natural pool. The beach is incredibly smooth. In the water you are walking on a carpet, it is truly surreal. We stayed with Villa Flamenco Beach which is different than Flamenco Beach Villas. VFB is a privately owned property. 4 studios upstairs and 2 2 bedrooms downstairs. The studios are the way to go. Since they are on the upper level you should reserve one of the two in the front. Waking up to that scene is something I will never forget.
You really should rent a car. Depending on other people's schedules is not something you need to worry about on your vacation. The car's are relatively cheap and you can explore the entire island and all the beaches.

Yup. Flamenco Beach Villa. I had the phone # correct. I agree 100% with the previous post. If you get a front apartment, you can watch the cruise ships in the middle of the night- very nice.

Jayme is describing Villa Flamenco Beach. It's owned by Max and Esmeralda and you can call 787-742-0023 or email esmer@coqui.net for more information. The upstairs front studios are definitely the way to go. There is a big complex next door called Culebra Beach Villas (??) which has a lot more units on four floors.

Yes, Villa Flamenco Beach. I never met Max but Esmerelda was very nice. It is very private and quiet. Another thing about the studios upstairs is they all have a/c . New and large bathrooms and nice white ceramic tiles throughout.
The property next door offers limited food and drinks with limited hours. They make a great mango daquiri and cheeseburger though!!!!!!

Dear D. King:
I found your mail in one of my seach about Culebra. To answer some of your question. Culebra has many places to stay one of them is Casa La Pela. It is a house 3 bed and 2 bathrooms, with outstanding views of the ocean. If you want to seach this is the address www.cvillas.com/puertorico/casalapela/index.html.
Also if you want to rent a car there are many places in the town that you can rent without spending a lot of money. Also you may rent bicycles around the town. If you go to the town, ask for the Alcardia, City hall. They have a whole turist information guide and places that are safe and pleasant for you to visit. Bring a camera with plenty of film. You will love the staying in Culebra Island. For prevention bring mosquito repelent and plenty of sun protection cream. Temperatures there are most of the time 85 and up with a humidity of 100%. If this is your first time there I would recommend that you only drink water bottle and eat plenty of sea food. It is cheap there.
