I have visited St. John several times, Culebra is very similar to St. John. Like St. John, Culebra has beautiful water and beaches, and is not an over commercialized destination.
Both locations are exceptionally clean and crime is very low. As with St. John, Culebra is very quiet (almost dead) at night time. The hotel accommodations in St. John are superior to Culebra. Culebra will not have a resort that compares to the ones on St. John until the Costa Bonita Resort opens this March.
St. John has more upscale (expensive) dinning options, and a better variety of shops.
In my opinion Culebra has better beaches and reefs to snorkel. I definitely recommend Culebra and bet that you can get much more for your money. My family agrees that we have more to do in Culebra than in St. John.
August is a great time to visit, because the Island is not crowded with visitors.
