What do you need electric for? Charging cell phones and cameras?

Enjoy Culebra!

Actually, not a bad question. I was thinking of the same question, because I use a cPAP machine for sleeping and will need to charge a battery to be able to camp.

They have these small solar chargers now. I think they even sell backpacks with solar panels at Paragon ... anybody any experience with either?

In a day and age when you can pluck your i-pod into your jacket, charging stuff schouldn't be such a big deal - should it?

Enjoy Culebra!

Unfortunately a solar powered charger would not be adequate to charge a marine deep cycle battery. The question of electricity at Flamenco Beach Campgrounds is still open.

Herb, that depends on the solar panel and the charger, but those small thingies definitely would not be up to the task,

Why don't you call the campground and find out whether they would let you plug in during the day?

Enjoy Culebra!

No, there is no electricity in the campgrounds except for the camp ground offices/ guard booth. SO, as Michael said, find it it they will let you charge in their offices during the day. :)

I've tried to resist asking, but I just can't...

"because I use a cPAP machine for sleeping"

What is a cPAP machine??

People with sleep apnea use it at night while sleeping. Sleep apnea causes one to stop breathing while sleeping, and the machine causes you to breathe evenly; I think it forces air into your lungs. At least that's my understanding.

I'm not a doctor, but I play one on TV

Happy Diving!

MJ, Debbie is pretty much correct. It "inflates" your throat and lungs. Without it, the inner part of your throat collapses as you relax and begin to fall asleep. As such, one can not fall asleep because they sense themselves quitting breathing (sorry about the grammar), and therefore never reach REM sleep. Its a relatively common problem and unfortunately the surgical "solutions" have relatively few successful outcomes. You can Google cPAP and you may get surprised.

There are a number of cPAP machines which run off of 12v batteries, which enable folks to have some exposure to out door activities, and they can generally run 2-3 days between charges. Stationary camping such as Flamenco beach or Cinnamon Bay may be perfect settings for this. Another option is to obviously rent a car and run the cPAP on the battery from the rental and then recharge the battery using the car. Just driving it around the island will be sufficient to charge it back up.

BTW, I dont even play a doc on TV ;)

I am really curious now how many Amp hours at what voltage your cPAP machine actually uses during 8hrs of sleep.

Enjoy Culebra!

The campground office will probably accomodate you to charge your cPAP machine. They allow my friend to charge his cell phone last week... Their hours are a little sketchy, so you'll have to work within their schedule. Also, I beleive the kiosks have electrical hookups (maybe a good 2nd option).
Good luck!

Thanks for the answer! Good luck with using the office for charging the machine, I'd certainly think they would be open to allowing that.
