Dogs and Music?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello -- My husband and I will be visiting Culebra the last week in January. We live on a MUCH COLDER island off the coast of Maine, and look forward to getting completely pruny snorkeling in the warm waters off Culebra. I am a "clicker" dog trainer, and also a musician, but I will be without my dogs and without my guitar (and without our garden!) while on Culebra! I'm not crying TOO hard about it, haha, so excited, looking forward to this trip! But I just thought I'd put this out there: While we're on Culebra, we'd be happy to trade a canine training session and/or a guitar lesson or two for some fresh fruit, garden vegetables, fish, a night of music/jamming, a taxi ride? etc!

We arrive in San Juan on January 25 at 4 pm, so I guess we have to spend the night there, and will be in Culebra, not sure where we'll stay the 26th, but from the 27 to February 1, we'll be at Tamarindo estates. Happy New Year!

What a neat offer for trade! I don't have a dog (I'm still in people training class and I'm only allowed to practice on plants) or a guitar (Culebra allows me to sing - no SWI fines yet; me and a guitar would be pushing the envelope, even here), but I'll mention your offer to a few dog owners and anyone I know who still hasn't given up the dream of becoming a rock star. Your island attitude is going to make your time on Culebra great, I'm sure.

Me and my friend Andrew will be camping on Culebra Jan 27 through Feb 4 --we play guitar and sing (all kinds of styles). We would be interested in any music gatherings, singalongs, etc... The only problem is we will not have guitars with us. Tamarindo Estates is relatively close to the Flamenco Beach Campground. Maybe we could collaborate somehow--how fun. There's a good chance we can other campers there would like to listen to live music.
Anyone with ideas of how we could get this to work? Any one else interested??

Thanks everybody, it would be fun to make some music on the island! But I guess it is just so hard to bring a guitar! Right? I shouldn't bring a guitar? Right? Okay here's a new business idea Culebrans! Guitar rentals!! Hey, if anyone has a sincerely "playable" guitar, I would love to rent it! Or maybe trade a few guitar lessons for a guitar to borrow?

2 friends & I will arrive from ME on 1/31 to camp also & we sing; 1 friend last year brought a guitar. There were small groups after sundown on the beach with a rise up singing book; I look forward to music & warm water soon.

You traveling troubadors need to ask Santy Clause for a Martin Backpacker.
I saw one, fairly cheap, at:

Ya gotta cut and paste the whole thing.

There are some guitars around. No doubt you (any of you players/singers) will run into Amy Jo...just ask for her and you will find her - she sings, and has a guitar and would most likely love to play with some new people.

Lewis travels with a "baby" Alvarez. It has really great sound; he got it off of eBay from a seller that turned out to be right here in Atlanta. He loves it; it has great sound for such a small instrument.

He says the baby Taylor is the next best after the Alvarez, then the Martin.

I forgot that this site doesn't let you do special characters - frustrating when you're trying to post a link!

Copy and paste this into your browser to see a picture of Lewis playing the Alvarez:

My friend Andrew has compiled a nice 20-page (photocopied) book of songs to hand out--probably 40 or so popular & traditional songs we've used for many years. We'll try bringing several.

We'll look into bringing a guitar, but it will be tough since we'll be carrying camping gear--I just don't know if we'll have a way to carry it.

I'm looking forward to meeting other musicians--I think it could be a great to get together in the evening somewhere.

Does anyone have an idea where we can meet. The campground area may be ok, but I'm not sure about the Campground's policy for non-campers. Maybe we could meet near the parking area and not encounter ground control?

We could consider meeting somewhere else, if the campground is tricky.
Any ideas anyone?

ground control? sounds like david bowie ;)

flamenco is a public beach - don't worry, you can meet there!

Enjoy Culebra!
