Marriage in Culebra
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My fiance and I stayed at Culebra Beach Rentals and LOVED the place. We were wondering if it would be possible to have a wedding and reception on the island. We would like to have about 150 people, 200 max. Any comments or suggestions? Thanks!

200 people! getting to Culebra and finding places for everyone to stay, renting cars, catering, supplies, I don't know if you've ever tried to arrange anything like this in a 'normal' setting, but Culebra is a whole different story, sorry, but it sounds like a nightmare! If you want a relaxing wedding ceremony on the beach, have the wedding in San Juan and go to Culebra for your honeymoon!

Melanie -

I am of the same opinion as Banana and Ty - too difficult to pull off for that many people on Culebra!

Happy Diving!

I second everyone else's opinion. Unless you can settle for an extremely intimate ceremony, Culebra is not the place to have a wedding. My fiancee proposed there, but we have decided against a wedding there. Yes, it's the perfect place for honeymooners.

I really appreciate everyone's input. It's really like planning a whole vacation for people. I guess 200 is an improbable number. I saw that Culebra Beach Rentals could accomodate ~140 people so I jumped at the idea. So how about if it were more like 50...would one of the restaurants be able to have that many for a reception and are there any churches in Culebra? This is all purely speculative. I dont plan on getting married until around 2009.

There are Catholic and Methodist churches on Culebra that I know of - likely others, too. 50 might work if planned far enough in advance.

Check with Juanita Banana's for the reception! They are the best!

My first trip to Culebra was actually to attend a wedding. It was held at the Catholic Church (in town across from the post office), and there were about 50-75 people. However, many of those people were local. I would estimate that only about 25 family and friends came from the mainland States. The reception was held at the Gymnasium, and the food was prepared by the family. Now, 6 years later, you would be better able to find caterers and locations for receptions. Juanita Bananas is an option, as is Molly of Casa Tropical http://www.casatropical.us/index.html. Also, the Dinghy Dock has the ability to cater functions. Bahia Marina would be an option for a reception dependent on the time of year. Actually, all of this is dependent on time of year - Jan, Feb, March, April - hard to find rooms for that many people unless you plan way in advance, and restaurants may be hesitant to shut down their operations for a reception during high season. Good luck if you decide to do it.

Happy Diving!

Wish you the best of luck with your planning. I'm planning an out-of-state wedding right now and it's not the easiest task, but it's doable. 50 people in mine too ;)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I hate to disagree with so many people on this issue, but I think Culebra is a fabulous place for a large wedding and reception. And given the right information, it woulnd't be hard to pull off. We have the experts here to help.

Have your guests check out allvacationreservations.com which lists nearly all rental properties and hotel rooms. They can reserve their OWN room/house, etc. so this is out of your hands.

Vacation Planners (and I have no financial investment here!) can also find the right place for a reception or the wedding itself, depending on the size of the venue you want. We have great chefs who are caterers for big events, so whereEVER you decide to have your reception would be fine.

Your guests can also individually call Carlos Jeep Rental or Jerry's Jeep and book their own cars... Again, THEY take care of this, and not you.

Depending on the time of year (especially if this is not over a major holiday weekend) there are accomodations, vehicles and churches available to help you make this a wonderful time for you.

So the bottom line is that you make a couple of calls... and let the folks here take care of the rest.

Good luck.

Bonnie

If you try this, be thinking well ahead and off peak. Transferring the headaches to the guests does nothing to expand the supply of accommodations and cars. June is the month for weddings, so that is more realistic than January.

Good luck!

I hate to disagree, but with the hi-speed ferry not running this season, that makes it hard for people to get on and off the island. I think anyone with kids especially would find it hard. Yes, a beautiful place no doubt. But anyone expecting phones in the room will be sadly mistaken. All you have to do is read tripadvisor.com to see the horror stories that would scare anyone. My family is planning a wedding in Culebra, and I think what they did was look at the beach and say "this is beautiful." Yes, it is, no doubt. However, when you look at the infrastructure of the island, or really lack there of, I don't think the wedding attendees will all be so willing to go to such a remote place without some modern needs. I wish you the best, but make it easy on your guests and think about how much this is going to cost them per person.
