Keeping belongings safe on the island
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We will be spending a few days on Culebra camping. During the day we will be off sightseeing and such, and don't want to leave our stuff unattended at the campsite. We will be without a car, so does anyone have any ideas of where we could store our stuff so we can sightsee/snorkel/kayak without worrying about our stuff being stolen?

Michelle, why don't you rent a car on the island?

Enjoy Culebra!

What kind of items are you worried about? Your camping gear, or items such as cameras, cell phones, money? The campground is extremely safe, and from all accounts, there is little theft on the island, including the campground. Many people on this forum have successfully left cell phones, cameras, money, etc. in their knapsacks with their beach towels while swimming, snorkeling, etc. and no one touches it. The locals even leave their keys in their cars around the island. It's a very safe place, which can be a little mind boggling to those of us from big cities of the mainland States. If you are leaving the campground, take your keys, camera, cell phone etc. with you, but don't worry about your clothes, hammocks and cookpots. Nothing's going to happen to it.

Happy Diving!

We are trying to avoid the cost of renting a car on both Culebra and Vieques. It is just out of our budget. We are still trying to get our rental car from the mainland over, but if that doesn't work we are wondering what to do with our stuff during the day. I have read many warnings about petty theft on the island so that suprises me to read a post saying its very safe....

Camping in Sun Bay and Flamenco are two completely different issues - safety wise

Enjoy Culebra!

To expand on what Michael said here, Vieques is not as safe as Culebra. There, I would be more concerned where you leave your belongings, possibly because there is a much larger population. Culebra on the other hand is about the safest place you can be in Puerto Rico. Yes, on the main land there is a lot of theft, but not in Culebra. Here is a suggestion since renting a car is not in your budget: rent a bicycle and chain your sealed belongings with it? You can also rent scooters for a bit less than the price of renting a vehicle which also allows you to secure your personal belongings.

Have a great time!

Michelle,

Culebra is safe and I am speaking from personal experience because I too left many items in a bookbag on the beach and I wouls just glance over once in a while to check it and I found that no one could care less about it.

I think you are thinking of Vieques because I read the same line abotu a lot of petty theft but it was directed to Vieques.

Good luck by the way we rented a scooter for the day it was 30 dollars for the day and it has a pretty decent size storage on it.

I have been to Culebra on five previous occasions and I have never had any type of incident involving theft on Flamenco Beach. I have left personal items and cash in my pants pockets or my wifes handbag and we have never had an incident. Culebra is virtually crime free.
