Camping at Playa Flamenco
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,
I'll be coming to Culebra for a week starting on November 12th and plan to camp at Flamenco for the whole time (my travel budget is virtulally nonexistant!). What do folks think about reservations - necessary? I'm really excited to experience the island for a week on a shoestring, and have a great time of it.
Cheers,
Dave

dave, i believe the campground should have plenty of room. i camped there a few years ago in january and there was only about 10% of campground being used. it may be more popular now, but i would guess you will have no problem finding a spot. Easter/spring break is another story...
I suggest camping as far north on campground as you can. nice and secluded with good places for tents just over the sand dune from the beach. very relaxing to get up in the morning and watch the sunrise. the campground attendant i delt with was very friendly and helpful with all questions i had. watch out for sand flies. I didn't react from the bites, but my wife did. I think they make bug spray for them. It would be a good investment if you think your skin will get irritated from the bites.

There's a good travel book called Let's Go Puerto Rico on a budget...it's really good for alot of money saving ideas etc...you can get it from the library to save even more money...like I did :-)

It mentioned reservations are recommended during hi season (april - Sept) which can get pretty roudy and liquor oriented...in Area C, but areas D and E tend to be quieter and more suitable for families (take your pick!) So this time of year it's much quieter...$20 per tent up to six people (I wonder how big their tents are?)
Cash only so be sure to have it....

Hope that helps...

Just came back from a great week - thanks all! Had the place nearly to myself, and to those looking for info after me, I'd highly reccommend area E. Some might bristle at the $20/night charge, but considering you're sleeping on one of the world's most beautiful beaches, and the staff at Flamenco is extremely friendly and helpful, its not a bad deal at all. It also seems that debit (ATM/ATH) cards are now accepted too - call before you go, though, to confirm.

Hi Dave,
Is it possible to get some infos since you just came abck and I am leaving for Culebra in 3 days!

Did you have rough time with mosquitos and roaster at the campground? We cannot bring small gas tank for cooking , is it possible to get some on the island? We didn't do any reservation, but it should not be usefull, don't you think?

Was the water calm at Flamenco?

Sorry for all these questions but I am so excited to go there!

Thanks!

Clarisse
