Need info ASAP please
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Carmen S. Melendez (---.dyn.optonline.net)

I have been to PR a few times. I am Puerto Rican although born in NY, my family is from PR. However, I've never been to Culebra. I am going on to PR this coming Saturday (8/12) and would like to visit. It will be my husband, my soon-to-be 2 year old son and myself. We'd like to visit on the way back home from visiting family. Where would be a nice family place to stay that is near a beach. Also we will have a rental, how do we book the ferry for the rental?
Thank You!

Why? Please. I need to rent a car when I get to PR and will be visiting family. It'd be difficult to return the car before culebras then rent another on the island and then have to return an drent another to get to the airport. Please let me know why. Thanks for the 2c :) I need another 10c

Carmen, reservations for the car on the ferry need to be made well in advance, I don't know if you will have time to do this. My recommendation would be to fly from the Fajardo airport and leave your car there for $8.00 per day. Once in Culebra, you can take the publicos to the beach for a cost of $2.00 per person which is is a good deal. The cost of the flight from Fajardo is about $50.00 for adults. I'm not sure what the cost for a child would be. Since you didn't state how much time you would be spending in Culebra (I'm assuming 2 or 3 nights) your best bet would be to stay at a place close to Flamenco Beach. If you look on this website under shelter, there are a few places to stay which are minutes from the beach. I think Casa Ensenada will fill your needs.

Good luck and have fun

car rental companies on mainland puerto rico DO NOT allow you to take their cars on the cargo ferry. should you choose to disregard this rule know that your car will no longer be insured !

Hi Carmen, I know you're short for time so rather than exchanging e-mails on this site, you or you husband are more than welcome to call me at home anytime after 8:30 PM. I live in Long Island and my number is 631-439-1854

casa ensenada, i agree is a good choice they are within walking distance to most everything and you will have no problem getting public transportation to flamenco beach.

Jorge & Island Girl..thanks so much for the info--will let my husband know. I appreciate your time! Was not aware of the car rental rule so thanks sounds like it's best to leave it behind. Do I have to book the flight in advance?

Another note my husband brought up and one I forgot. The biggest reason we want to have the rental is because we have a 2 yr old and taking publicos with a car seat is a bit cumbersome. Jorge, I wanted to call you but it's 10pm not sure if that is too late. Do you have the number for the cargo ferry to see if we can book it? I'll have to investigate the insurance thing--maybe my own insurance would cover God forbid there was damage to the car during the ride. Thanks.

You will have more troubles than benefts taking a car there, plus you will loose valuable time because the cargo ferry takes double the time to get you either way.
A smart/wise decision is to forget about the car, and your husband is not thinking about your kid, he is only thinking in the car being parked and still paying for it. You do not need for car seat, you'll have to carry your kid's gear, not only in Culebra... everywhere you go.

Mister Capt. Thanks for your info but better not to include judgemental comments. $8/day is not something to cry about so that is not what my husband is thinking about. Besides carrying my son's gear around which part of our everyday life, vacation or not, my son's safety is both our concern. And a car seat is not part of our everyday gear that we have to carry around. But I think looking at the rest of the forum, you like to stir up a ruckus in every topic so I'll leave it there. Guess you don't get a lot of attention in other parts of your life so you try to get it here. So hopefully this little bit of attention from me will make you feel better.

Carmen, you can call me anytime before 11:00 PM my wife and I do not have an issue with that. I just got off the phone with the reservations group for the ferry in Fajardo. You need to call 787-863-0705 ASAP to get a reservation. The ferries that take cars to the island leave daily at 4:00 AM and on Friday's they have a second vessel that leaves Fajardo at 9:30 AM. When I called the the number above I followed the prompts for reservations before I was told to leave a message. Don't leave a message just hit the number zero on your keypad and you will get a reservation agent on the phone. She did state that you have to call ASAP.

God Luck

Carmen, you won't need a car seat when you take the publicos to the beach. They drive slowly and carefully. You can put the baby on your lap and then put on your seat belt. The drivers of the publicos often let people sit in the front seat along with the driver.

Carmen,

My husband and I just came back from Culebra and while it was only us I can assure you that traffic is not an issue there. We rented a scooter (I know you will not be able too but I am making a point here i promise) and my husband was a little bit scared to drive with traffic and we found out there was hardly any traffic and I think the most we could do on the scooter was 25 and that was with the flow of the two other car traffic we were in going to flamenco beach. I guess in the middle of all of this rambling I am trying to say it is really low key hardly any traffic to worry about and I was there during the 4th of July week.

Good Luck in whatever you decide to do and I do believe you are right about Captain Guzman.

Carmen, I spoke with Isla Nena this afternoon ($60.00 roundtrip from Fajardo to Culebra per person) and I spoke with (Air Flamenco $54.00 roundtrip from Fajardo to Culebra). Isla Nena has flights at 6:30 AM, 10:00 AM, 12:00 noon, 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. If your son weighs less than 30 pounds he will ride on your lap for free. The phone numbers for both airlines are as follows:

Isla Nena 1-877-812-5144

Air Flamenco 1-787-801-8256

Hope everything works out for you and your family

Thanks everyone for your input. I think we'll save a trip to Culebra when we have more planning time. I'll definately come back to this forum to get more info. We leave to PR this Saturday and I feel we need more planning time for this trip. If it was just my hubby and me, we'd wing it like we've done in the past but with my son I don't want to take any chances. Probably better when he is a little older anyway. We are going to stay, God willing, at the Martineau Bay Hotel in Vieques. The beach and pool are right there and my hubby's friend recommended it. He got married there.
So to everyone, thanks again for the info and I look forward to visiting Culebra next year hopefully! God bless!
