Culebra Island Villas
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Maxwell Mead (---.colo.dc1-alb.inoc.net)

I was looking around for a fairly cheap place to stay for five people and found Culebra Island Villas. The pictures look decent, but I can't tell too much about the apartment I am interested in, Villa Cielo. Does anyone know anything about Culebra Island Villas or another cheap place for five people to stay for a week in August? Also, how is the weather in August? Is it a good time to visit Culebra. Thanks for your help!!!

August is extremely hot, close to hell.
In Culebra there is nothing cheap to begin with, Culebra Beach Villas, are beach front to Flamenco.
As I have seen reviews, for CBV, most of the time people take the time to let know their satisfaction.
If you are coming in August, take a close look EVERY DAY, for at least three days before comming, to weather info, as this is the peak of hurricane season.

Hope this helps.

Culebra Island Villas, Capt. Guzman is the same as Harbor View Villas on the harbor side. It is not located on Flamenco Beach.

Happy Diving!

I know that CIV is at www.culebra-island-villas.com. I am trying to find out if this is a decent place to stay. I was hoping a couple of people would have some sort of feedback for me on the condition of the apartments since there are no pictures of the apartment I am interested in.

Also, I would welcome other ideas for a place where 4 people can stay. We are looking to pay between $600-$900 for the week, August 7-14 2005, so if you have any ideas, please let me know. THANKS!!!

Evelyn - considerng CIV charges 500$ for a week that is indeed 'not too expensive' for Culebra!

but please contact the respective owners/agents from their websites - here people give their opinions (some more biased than others) and very often are not associated with the establishments!

Enjoy Culebra!

We are certified divers but haven't been diving for 7 years. Debbie, you seen to know alot about diving. What and who would you suggest? We have previously been to the Caymans, Cozumel, Akumal and the Bahamas. Can you rent equipment there? (We have our own, but it is obviously not "state of the art" at this point.

CIV is simple, clean and has excellent views. Fancy is not an operative word, or extra amenities, but I'd stay there with my family for a less expensive option. Note: There are a lot of stairs to climb, so if someone in your group is not physically able to do some stair climbing...it's something to think about.

Taz with Aquatic Adventures is a real hoot! The Dive shop (Walter & Monica) are really sweet too - they're right at the ferry dock, but they're a bit more expensive as they have more overhead ( the gift shop and what not). Taz also includes lunch, the shop does not.

We got great pictures with both of them. Taz took my husband & I on our first "cavern" dive through some of the tubes near Culebrita, but we also did some very relaxing "aquarium" dives.

You'll be happy with either. I've just known Taz longer and love hanging out with him!

Lois,

Sorry for the delayed response; it's been a busy summer for me. We always dive with Culebra Divers - http://culebradivers.com/ but have met and dived with Taz Hamrick http://www.culebradive.com/ as well (though not under his supervision). Both have new equipment for rental. They both go to same/similar dive sites. Don't pass up the opportunity to dive there - the reefs are pristine! Not great visibilty like Cozumel and Cayman, but the health of the reefs makes up for that.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

I visited Culebra in March and stayed at the Culebra Beach Rentals in Flamenco Beach. We loved the place! Beautiful sunsets, nice clean beach, no crowds (considering that it was Spring Break for colleges in the US), nice waves for body surfing...I was very impressed. There are a couple of units that can fit 5 people easily. These units had A/C, Kitchens, and a really nice terrace with hammocks.

If you are planning to stay more than a couple of days or during the week, you should consider renting a car. Taxis very reliable and the cheapest alternative as long as they are on shift and not on the mainland or on their day off.

The trip from the ferry is easy except that the entry road to the Villas is a dirt road and has a lot of potholes.

Overall we enjoyed our stay in Culebra and can't wait to go back. It’s a beautiful place, very nice people, and relaxing atmosphere.

Hi! I saw that you had rented a scooter when you were there and I was hoping that you could give me some insight. I will be out there for three weeks and really need transportation for when my husband is at work. It has to be affordable. I really don't won't to be on foot for three weeks. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

let me know if you find out any scoop on scooter rentals. I will be out there in three days and I am looking for something affordable. I can tell you that my husband is already out there and we could not find anything affordable enough to bring my kids out there. I will be staying with him and his co-workers.

Meg,

My husband and I went with the scooter option because it was affordable. They get like somewhere between 60-85 mpg and if you think about it the island is only 4 by 7 miles so you can do the math to figure out that is the wise choice to do.

Good Luck

Meg: The scooter that my husband rented was at the Culebra airport, as followed the phone number 787-742-0195. The first day we pay $40, and the following days $30. So if you are going to stay more that four days she will gave you a very good price. We only full it ones and it was only $3.00.

Good Luck,

Angelica

My husband and I booked the Culebra Island Villas. When we arrived there was no one to meet us at the airport like I was told there would be. Even after I left a message the day before. But we were ok with that; we just rented our jeep a day earlier. Then we went to Hotel Kokomo’s office to check in (there both owned by the same person, but booked through different agents). The office was closed from 11am to 4pm. We finally got checked into our room 5 hours after we got there, with no apology. It was only because of the generosity and help from Alicia and Fedo, the owners of Cafe Isola, that we ever got hold of anyone to help us check into our room. The owners/ bookers had not had the room cleaned, so we waited another hour for them to do that. We were ok with it since we had a nice place to hang out (café Isola), mind you we would have liked to be on the beach. We tried not to stress( which was easy since we were in paradise.) I’m afraid most other people in this situation would have. We were just happy to be checked in so we could catch the last hours of sunlight on the beach. Just thought I would post this for future travelers to Culebra. thanks to Fedo and Alicia for all there help. GREAT people!

And that is how one enjoys Culebra - GO WITH THE FLOW and you won't be disappointed. Type A personalities need not arrive.

By the way, it's "Fede" as in Federico.

In case anyone else took my post as "nasty," it was meant to be a compliment to kate burley for rolling with the punches. Culebra is best enjoyed when doing so. My comment on type A personalities was not directed at kate or anyone else in particular.

Peace?

I didn't read it that way at all, Debbie. It is sound advice. We have seen posts here from people who let their uninformed expectations ruin what could have been a wonderful visit to Culebra. Vegas or Manhattan, it's not, thank God!

Kate,

I'd like a little more detailed info, if you don't mind. We will be arriving in 30 days or so and are staying at Culebra Island Villas. Which villa # did y'all stay in? What day of the week did y'all arrive? Are they out of the office every day from 11am-4pm? I am happy to know that there will be a place that we can go and relax should we encounter similiar delays. Knowing what you now know, if you had an opportunity to rewind your trip and start over, what would you do differently, what or how would you plan differently anticipating the delays?

I keep reading this thread because I have been planning to book a unit at Culebra BEACH Villas but some of the people are writing about Culebra ISLAND Villas and some about the beach villas (on Flamenco Beach) so it is confusing to a newbie. The person who complained about not being met at the airport and finding the office closed said Culebra ISLAND Villas. I think the GOOD reports about clean rooms, nice porches, etc. are about the BEACH villas I am interested in , right???? Would someone "in the know" please respond?

Culebra ISLAND Villas is located just outside of town overlooking the harbor. It is not on the beach. It is past Casa Ensenada shown on the map on this site. See http://www.culebra-island-villas.com/. Culebra BEACH Villas is located on Flamenco Beach. See http://www.culebrabeachrental.com/index.htm. There is also Villa Flamenco Beach - http://www.culebra-island.com/CulebraIsland/Places_to_Stay/Villa_Flamenco_Beach/villa_flamenco_beach.htm. Both of these are located at the end of the road at Flamenco Beach. Hope this helps.

Hi Debbie we are located past Casa Ensenada only if coming from the airport. When you come from the ferry you have to make a right onto the drawbridge and we are past Boheme and Fulladoza. You can click on the location link next to our listing in this site for a pretty accurate location!
