How safe is my towel & car key at the beach?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi,

My fiance has read on the car rental websites not to leave any valuables in the car while swimming. duh. Apparently, they have also stated that you are to leave the windows down, and nothing in the car. You are NOT to bury the car key in the sand, nor are you to get it wet. OK, where are you suppose to store the key? What about belongings such as towels, sunblock, water, coolers, etc... how safe are these types of belongings on the beach? My fiance is concerned that if we take any type of a beach bag that it may be stolen by someone thinking we have something of value in it.

Can someone give me information, suggestions, hints..etc...as to what is the best way to handle personal property at the beach and protect ourselves from having the little bit that we will be bringing with us on our honeymoon stolen.

Thank you.

Cissy,

Throughout Culebra (not just the beach), we remove our keys from the ignition and leave them in the car. Petty theft is not a problem in Culebra. If you feel that strongly about it, buy a waterproof case and take the key with you while swimming.

See: http://www.aquapac.net/usstore/erol.html enter keymaster in the search box.

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Cissy,

Although I can not speak for Culebra....But I know the feeling you are having. My husband and I were like that our first time in Puerto Rico at Escambron and we always had our eyes out looking at our stuff to make sure the bag was still there. No one touched anything and in fact I felt guilty to think otherwise because the people that were on the beach were hardworking locals just enjoying their weekend and last year we bought an umbrella at the beach stands and it kept coming out of the sand because it was so windy and the locals, while we were in the water swimming, living it up were chasing it for us. We did get out after we noticed but at first we didn't realize it was ours that blown away. They are friendly people and from what I have read on these posts you might be on the beaches alone most of the time.

I hope it all works out for you!

Ginayac

In all the years I've been on Culebra ... I have never done anything but left my keys in the rental car at the beach. Always figured that even if it was stolen, it wouldn't take long to track the thiefs down on one of the 5-6 roads on the island!!

On the beach with personal belongings, we just leave them in our bag while we swim, walk, hike etc. Over eight years we've never had an issue.

Thank y'all for your help. Having never been there before our knowledge is limited to what we read and the warnings given. I am very happy to know that the warnings are basically precautionary, though I have read on line about people having things taken. I guess those are the very rare cases.
Thanks again. - Cissy
