Jerry's Jeep rental
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Does anyone know what happened with Jerry's Jeeps rental ?

I'm going to Culebra for the first time in June, and would like to book from him, based on all the feedback I've seen on this site and on tripadvisor -- but both of his phones seem perpetually busy.

Thanks !

Jerry likes to talk! But he's a great guy and very helpful! Price was right too! I found his place easily by walking out of the airport and looking across the street.

Hey Alahia!

You're shameless promotion of Carlos's on every post is extremely annoying! Jerry's was a great experience for us and I highly recommend him. His wonderful map seemed confusing at first but became very clear as we used it throughout the week. We stopped in almost every day to get island info which he was happy to share. Good luck.

We rent from Jerry every time. Usually we just leave a message and he returns our call. Jerry is a real nice guy. BTW if you do rent from Jerry and he's not at his place have a seat. He eventually shows up.

Jerry is fabulous! He's a wealth of information about the island and it's history. Also, his jeeps do not have any identification on them that would make it obvious that a tourist was driving it. I have heard in the past (don't know if it's true) that the police keep a special eye on the tourist rentals for even slight infractions so that they can give you parking tickets... :) Carlos' jeeps all have his pretty little license tag on the front - makes you stick out like a sore thimb.

But besides all that, Jerry is a fantastic guy - very honest & an ex-pat, so he's familiar with "American style service". Get him to sign your map - those things are famous!

My husband and i are arriving at the airport around 11:00 next Wednesday. Should we book a jeep for that day, or will we find plenty to do on foot that day, there in town. Were staying close to town. We want to cut back on cost a little. So were thinking we could use that day to figure out what we want to do. Tell me what you think, and your experiences.

You can hoof it for a day to check things out and see what you want to do and where you want to go. Should be easy this time of year to be a walk-up customer to get a car. If you're staying in town, you'll quickly figure out whether you want to get a car or not. I've stayed there a couple of times where I walked everywhere.

I had the same experience - line always busy, then finally he answered:
"Hello?" I said "I'm trying to reach Jerry's Jeeps" and he bellowed "That's me!" All very informal and cool. Keep trying. He is obviously a great guy, just like everyone says.

Jerry IS great. He is a fountain of very good information. His phone may be busy because he very well may be answering a customer's question with excellent clarity.
As for Culebra's enforcement of seat belt laws, if you think you could survive a wreck on almost any Carribean island without wearing a seat belt, well, you're wrong. After having once spent ten years of my life as an ambulance EMT, I can say no one rides with me without seatbelts on.

I would like to know if anyone has an idea of what it would cost me to rent a scooter for three weeks?

I've never rented one; always rented a beater from Jerry, but basically, this time of year when there are few tourists, and especially since you need transportation for so long, someone will make you a deal - shop around when you get there. My experience has been that most people there don't answer their e-mails. Phone is best, if not in person.

Debbie, this is one of the busiest times of the year on Culebra! It is when the Puerto Rican's vacation on Culebra - and I think they rent scooters too!

I visited Culebra for the first time, during a weeklong trip to Puerto Rico over 4th of July. We had to do most of our research online, so we ended up looking at this forum and booking with Jerry based on the great reviews.

It's true that Jerry is a nice guy. He's very friendly, has (apparently famous) handwritten maps that have a lot of info, but should definitely be used in conjunction with an actual road map. He also lent us snorkelling equipment!

However, the jeep (Geo Tracker) that he rented us (for $50/day-- we were there for about 48 hours over 3 days and we were charged $150) had over 100K miles on it, a seatbelt on the driver's side that kept getting jammed, and at one point the check engine light went on in the evening and the engine made really horrible noises, and we weren't able to reach Jerry on his cell. Thankfully the problem stopped after we let the engine cool down. Someone referred to Jerry's jeeps as "beaters" on this forum and that's exactly what you can expect to get.

When we got into the Culebra "airport" (flew an 8-seater from Fajardo), it was clear that Carlos is the biggest outfit on the island. He has a pretty big fleet of new-looking Jeeps, and most of the tourists we saw (Puerto Ricans from the main island) had rented from him. I can't comment on the service or price at Carlos's because we didn't check, but next time we go to Culebra, we'll be booking with him!

Kim,

No sense of romance or adventure! Tsk, tsk...

Just kidding, just kidding.

Carlos is about $15-20 more per day, as best I can remember. If there was anyplace to go on Culebra that took longer than 15 minutes I might consider it, but y'know, Jerry is a friend by now and it's a pleasure to do business with him.
