Culebra Holy Week Trip Report
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Steve S (---.hsd1.va.comcast.net)

My wife and I spent Semana Santa on Culebra and had a wonderful time. Before going, I looked back through the forum and saw all the warnings about going then. Since she works at a school, that week was our only option. It was our 25th anniversary vacation, and we didn't try to do it on the cheap. Having a rental house out by ourselves may have been the key.

I've created a lengthy online trip report with links to around 200 photos. There are photos showing the crowds in some places and the lack of crowds in others. I wouldn't hesitate to do it exactly that way again (if I can figure out how to pay for it!)

The full report is online at:

We did enjoy Culebra!

I just noticed many of the photos are too large to fit in the window when you follow the link from this web site. You might want to copy and paste the URL into a new browser window.

Steve - that is the most awesome report on Culebra I've ever read! I guess we forgot to tell you that we like to keep all that a secret, huh?

In all my trips to Culebra, I've never seen that many people on Flamenco, and hope I never do. I much prefer the three-cars-in-the-parking-lot-at-Zoni scenario.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Happy Anniversary!

Happy Diving!
Debbie

Thanks for the great photos! We were in Culebra the following week and shared a lot of the same sights. However your pictures are much nicer and will help fill some holes in our album.

Its too bad that the secret of Culebra is out. I guess there's no avoiding it. Jerry of Jerry's Jeeps said the Internet has made a huge difference. We found out about the places we visited mostly by going through the posts on this forum. I'm pretty sure we would have ended up visiting Culebra even if we hadn't used the Internet. It sure made it easier! I assume my trip report won't have much impact. Its mostly for friends and family. I suppose the search engines will latch onto it though.

Jerry also said that the runway is going to be extended into Ensenada Honda so larger planes can land. Does anyone know any more about that? We wish the locals luck in keeping development to a reasonable level.

We arrived in Culebra in the late afternoon on April 8 and left in the mid afternoon on April 15. We'd loved to have had even more time!

Steve,

I just read your report today, lovely!! And such great pictures, if I didn't live here I'd want to go to Culebra.
Thanks for the nice words too. It was wonderful to meet you both - visitors like you are what make sitting on the corner a joy ;)
Yep, the secret is no longer a secret, but Culebra sorta weeds out those who enjoy it for what it is from those who won't. There are Club Meds in lots of places!
Don't wait until your 50th to come back!

Where would the Flamenco Beach villas be in that photo of the Easter Weekend crowd? Do you remember if the worst of the crowd was in front of or near this property? I, too, am needing to plan for Easter holidays but am worried about whether or not that location would be too crowded or too noisy for us. Any suggestions about that? I like the look of the place otherwise and really wanted to stay there.

Ann,

I was just there in Culebra for the 4th of July and from what I saw on Flamenco is that there is a dwelling on the beach that appears to be seperated from the campers and just anyone really going to the beach for the day. I could be wrong but that is the impression my husband and I got that the section roped off was for the hotel/house.

Hope this helps and by the way if you are from the east coast Especailly northeast you will laugh when people say these places are crowded on Holidays $th fo July was maybe a less than a 1/4 of what a normal day at the Jersey Shore is. Anyway why not be mixed in with the locals we are all trying to learn more about the culture right?!

Good Luck,
Gina

My family was at Flamenco on Easter Sunday. I do not not know if this is one of the busiest days or not. The main part of the beach was only moderately crowded. The Villas were far away and seemed to have their own small crowd that was completely seperate from the main beach crowd.

Steve,

Thank you very much for your report. It has been very helpful to me as I am planning a day trip to Culebra in November. It's a shame that even though I was born in PR, I never visited Culebra. I've been living in San Diego the past 17 years so I am reallly looking forward to have a blast in Culebra. Thanks again.

Take Care,

Hector

Hector,

My only regret for you is that you can only stay a single day. As has been noted on this forum, it will only frustrate you to have to leave so soon.

Doug

Doug,

I hear you ! :-) Maybe we can spend two days if things go my way :-) but as of right now it looks like only one since my wife and I will also be celebrating our 8th Anniversary as well as my daughter's 5th b-day and we're planning a weekend trip to St. Thomas as well. I am also planning a day visit to "Caja de Muerto" beach in Ponce since I will be staying in the southern part of PR. Thanks for your post.

Take Care,
