Time Frame
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi Everyone,

We are getting really frustrated with trying to book reservations for a flight from San Juan to Culebra. We just can't seem to coordinate a time to call the airlines when they are there and we are not working! So, if anyone has any suggestions along that line that could help, I would appreciate it.

Sorry to ask a question that I am certain has been asked/answered before, but I can't seem to locate the answer to this question. I am seriously considering going down to Fajardo to catch the ferry to hop over to Culebra. My concern is the time frame. We are coming in on the 22nd of May. We land in San Juan at 11 AM, and we need to check in to our place in Culebra by 6:30 PM. How long should we anticipate the trip to Fajardo by taxi is going to be? Is it hard to get a taxi to take us there from San Juan? Will there be enough time to catch the 3 PM ferry? How long does the ferry take to get from Fajardo to Culebra? I know that we don't want to take the cargo ferry over. And, last but not least, there is a disclaimer on the ferry schedule that says that the times are given without warranty. What exactly does that mean? Could we be stuck in Fajardo overnight?

Any help you can provide me would be very appreciated. We just want to get over to Culebra and enjoy our vacation, and so far getting off Puerto Rico is a challenge :-)

We made our reservations with Vieques Air Link (VAL) because they were the only one of the airlines which responded to e-mail. Their web page is http://www.viequesairlink.com/ and there is an e-mail link on the home page. They were fairly prompt about responding.

Hi. If your flight lands at 11am. Get your luggage and go right outside to the Taxi booth. Tell them that you need to go to Fajardo. The ride is about 45 minutes but in traffic it can be up to 1 hour and 30 minutes. You should be able to make it by the 3pm. A taxi will cost about $60.00 for two people excluding tip! I don't know if they will try to fill up a taxi and make you wait or not, but that's something you should anticipate! Once you get to fajardo and you board the ferry, it will only take you about 45 minutes to get to Culebra. I think you should be okay, but you might have to hussel a little bit!

About Air Link- We found out that it's part of the puerto rican culture to not be so professional with regards to the phone! I would advise to keep trying and search for the few numbers they provide! Try to call them in the morning because the afternoon was impossible for us to reach them! I can't remember the cost of the flight but if you search the airline on yahoo, you can find them with their different flight time options!

Good Luck and I hope you enjoy your stay!

I strongly suggest flying although I have not experienced the ferry. I would just rather use my time on the beach than an extra day of commuting! We used Air Flamenco... I'm on the West Coast and therefore tried to call early in the AM, so around 11 AM or so PR time. 12-3 is probably bad because it's siesta. Flamenco was the cheapest that I found, at I think $90 rt plus taxes. They were great.

One more piece of advice...since there are only a few flights a day (I think one is at 2:00) and you may have to wait a while, wait as long as you can at SJU airport. We didn't know and spent 4 hours at Isla Grande, which is about a 2000sf single room airport with some vending machines and a small cafe. It only took about 15 minutes to taxi from SJU to IG around noon on a weekday.

A couple things about flying.

With Air Flamenco they charge $0.45 per each additional pound of luggage over 25 pounds. We ended up spending an extra $40 between four of us. Our flight was around 3 p.m., and I agree with seafinapup that you should grab a bite to eat at the SJU airport before taking a taxi to Isla Grande airport (15 minutes away and approx $20 for four people). We ended up hanging out at Isla Grande and eating some icky airport cafeteria style food.

Thanks for everyone's help. We actually booked a flight on Air Flamenco right out of the San Juan airport ~ so no need to travel anywhere else. Whew! Good adivce from everyone. Thanks for the tip on the cost for extra pounds. We ususally travel light, but 25 pounds isn't really a great deal of weight when you are packing snorkeling equipment and all! Now we will be prepared.

This forum has been really helpful. We'll try to post a trip report when we get back. We leave on Monday.
