I had the same thoughts while going camping in Culebra in late January.
We basically had a daypack with all our important stuff ($, id, health insurance card, etc) and we never left it at the campsite. Before you leave, take out of your wallet anything that you will not need. Overall, we brought only the super-necessary stuff with us - so no passport, and no numerous credit cards, no video rental cards, no library cards, work id's, no 20 keys on a keyring, only one set of the home keys, etc. etc. We didnt even bring that much cash with us...most of the places take credit cards - including the campsite.

Another thing we do before travelling, photocopy front AND back (important emergency phone #s are on the back), of all the documents you are bringing with you (id, cc, health ins., plane ticket, etc) - leave a copy at home with you, or with a trusted person, in case anything does happen, and I usually bring a copy with me and hide it in a sock or other "unconspicuous" place - i don't think anyone would take a wooly sock.

We rented bikes and had to lock them up by the entrance to the campground overnight, they were untouched. Altough it wasn't crowded at all, I hear easter season and the summer gets really crowded, so overall, your experience might be different.

I hope this helps, use common sense and good judgement, and have a great time. Oh, and don't overpack.

-Ursula
