vacation planning advice?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I'm planning a vacation for sometime in spring, most likely in April. I'm looking for a place to stay for about a week in Culebra...on the cheaper end! As long as it has a double bed (boyfriend is coming) and is clean, we're OK with it! It looks like a lot of places have kitchenettes, which would be great.

I also have read that a car is handy. We plan to explore the island but would like to avoid renting a car to keep costs down. Any advice on that? Since it's pretty small I thought about renting bikes if that's a possibilty.

Any advice on places to stay and anything else would be much appreciated!! We can't wait!

For less than 100.00 per night Ville Boheme is the best choice.
If you look for real cheap, Hotel Puerto Rico, but fro the difference in Price... I would choose Villa Boheme.
You can find bikes, that is a good mean of transporation while in the island.

OK...I think I've narrowed it down to three places, of which one is VB. Would you have any comments on the other two?

Villa Boheme
Turtle's Nest (aka: Casablanca Condo #3)
Villa Fulladoza

Thanks!!

You won't have any problem getting transportation to Flamenco Beach either by walking or taking a taxi. Each time my wife and I attempted to walk to Flamenco a local would stop and insist on giving us a ride which we gladly accepted. If you're in decent shape you could easily ride a bike to Zoni Beach but carrying your gear might be an issue on a bike (I'm a cyclist so I know what a pain this can be). I would recommend renting a car for at least a day or two just to make it easier to get to the beaches further from town.

We looked at Villa Fulladoza while we were in Culebra recently and it looked very nice. I was wondering if the Villa Boheme gets much noise from the Dinjy Dock which can be loud in the evening.

Villa Fulladoza does not have any A/C on the rooms, and it is about the same price as VB.
Hotel Puerto Rico is a poor hotel, it is chea but not that cheap, may be you get a room woith out bath, for 60.00, or with bath for 75.00.

Thanks everyone! I'll probably go with Villa Boheme. I assume there is an ample supply of snorkel equip. for rent...any ideas on how much these cost?

We'll be spending a few days in San Juan as well. Any advice on whether to stay in Old San Juan (Caleta) or Condado (Casa del Caribe)?

The trip is finally starting to take shape...thanks!

For your San Juan stay I would suggest the Green Isle Inn in Isla Verde, think they renamed it the Coqui but you should be able to find it on the net. Pretty inexpensive and within walking distance to a the beach and reasonable restaurants. Unless, of course, you aren't looking for a beach in San Juan. Good Luck, Nance

We had to overnight in SJ and were underwhelmed by the Green Isle Inn. The rooms weren't that great. Didn't feel all that comfortable walking around the area after dark (but I can be paranoid).

Well, we'll be on Culebra for about a week, so in SJ we will do mostly sightseeing in Old San Juan and maybe go up to El Yunque.

I assume it's easy to take a taxi from Condado to Old SJ.

Very easy, they are adjacent to each other. Traffic can be an issue, however.

Old San Juan - Caleta rocks! Michael also has other vacation rentals that are awesome (some pricier than others)

Enjoy Culebra!

To anyone else who's interested...I have reserved Villa Boheme and with tax the cheap rooms come to $103 per night. I might change it however, since I just got a call back from Villa Fulladoza and their rates are only $65 + 9% tax (total ~$70.85). They also have a weekly rate that is a little cheaper (~$60/nt). It seems like they have everything VB has except A/C.

It seems like Boheme and Fulladoza are probably just next to each other. Can anyone who's been there confirm that?

thanks!

Spent (3) days back in May '05 in OSJ. Stayed at Hotel Milano. Very comfortable place with a restaurant/bar on top of hotel overlooking the harbor. Milano is centrally located to just about all the tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops there are in OSJ. I would stay there if ever I were to visit OSJ again. Puerto Rico Tropical Tours took us to El Yunque, Luquillo Beach, and the Bio-Bay near Fajardo for an awesome all day trip. The tour company picked us up a couple blocks away from Hotel Milano. If you need anymore information email me.

Yes, the Boheme and Fulladoza are on the same street. The Fulladoza is maybe a couple of hundred yards away. For what it's worth, in November and early December we did not need a/c in the house we were renting. The ceiling fans were fine. Personally I do not like to use a/c because it seems to delay my adaptation to the heat.

Both places looked nice and clean form the outside. They are walled of from the street, and look well maintained. Stayed at the Hotel Milano in Old San Juan. Very nice location, easy walk to waterfront area, and lots to see. El Morro was incredible and the views were awsome. Taxi from International airport was about 20.00 plus tip. Very nice place, can send you a picture or two if you want. Jean
