One Step Up From Camping
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I've been researching low key, quiet places with beach access. Does that exist for less than $100/night for two people? We are really looking for bare bones, one-step-up-from-camping for a week end of Feb/beginning of March. Culebra Beach Villas sound like that, though you sounds like the level of enjoyment/trouble depends on what unit you're in. Otherwise, is camping quiet/safe? Also, if I am an avid bicyclist, can I bike the whole island? Is it a viable method of transportation? Thanks for any insight you can provide!

Biking is definitely a plus except for that mountain between the town and Flemenco beach camping. How in-shape are you. The moped I rented hardly made it over the mountain..

Camping is generally safe. Weekend nites are noisey in the past. Bring ear plugs and headphones if your a light sleeper.

Flemenco is a great place to camp. That time of year the mosqito's are at a minimum . I stayed In Culebra a couple months and got around via bicycle. In fact in my opinion it's the only way to go, the roads are small and it can get a bit crowded during holidays.I rode all over the island alot of hill's ..Bring alot of water there is none at Zoni ,but it's the best beach on the island in my opinion. It's a nice ride. It's secluded and you can see st. Thomas from there.Biking at night could be a problem have good light's it get's real dark. You'r better of camping then a step up. A step up is noisy and slumy . Rooster's will wake you at 4:00am anyway, there are hundreds of them running wild all over the island

The camping is a lot better that it use to be. For a small fee you can expect a clean public bathroom, public showers, security, the camping area is segregated and controled. It's great if you are in a budget or like to be close to nature. They provive public transportation ($2.00 from Dewey). You can also buy sodas, bottled water, snacks and souveniers.

Yes, if you are in good shape you can rent a bike and go all over the place...including ZoniBeach. I did it myself!

have fun

PS We'll be back to culebra from 12-30 thru 1-06-06
