West Side Anchorages
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I was wondering what would be the best anchorage for flexibility? Seems that if we anchored on the west side of the island might give us the option of visiting Luis Peria as well as others up the west coast.
Looking to rent a car to visit the north beaches, which anchorage would be convienent for that purpose.
I understand one of the West side anchorages is the main harbor for traffic. I would think we would want to stay out of that one even though it said we could dingy to the other side?? Or is it big enough that the traffic is not significant.

We also plan on Culebrita but figure that will be our last overnight before heading back to St. Thomas or St. John.
Any advise would be helpful.

I'm not a boater beyond smaller power boats but we did rent a powerboat for a couple of days when we visited last Feb. I recall bouys that you could tie off to at one of the snorkeling spots called Melones. If you tied off there as we saw other yachts and sailboats doing, it would place you just around a small point from the ferry dock. If you click on the "MAPS" icon to the left on this web page the bouys I refering to would be just off shore of the "O" in "Ocean View". From there you could take your dinghy into town to rent a car and shop etcetera. The car rental places are at the airport but it is all very close.

Having said that, the main harbor isn't all that busy but it would mean that, to visit Louis Pena, you'd have to go out and around the island to get there.

We visited Culebrita with our little boat bit didn't venture around to the mouth of the main bay there. I hear that care is needed entering since it can be treacherous if you miss the channel. We simply anchored off the west side and walked over. If you are in a larger boat you should, by all means try for the bouys in the protected main bay (where there's an anchor on the little map to the left). There will be very few if any other peole there and it is a HUGE beach. Wonderful. Here's a link that will show a motor yacht approaching the bouy at the center of the beach at Culebrita.

The entrance to the bay is to the right of the small island in the distance.

You'll find Culebra quiet, relaxing and rustic compared to STJ and STT.

It's worth noting that on the west side of the island, if you are in the protected areas of the refuge, (Theresa, correct me if I'm wrong on this) it is illegal to anchor except by using the anchor buoys. Please respect the fragile coral formations by using the buoys. Along with its beautiful beaches and friendly people, they are Culebra's finest resource.

Doug,

I am sure you are correct. The mooring balls are put in to protect the coral. They are all over the Virgins. Use to be free at St. Johns now we pay $15.00 per day. Worth every penny to protect the beauty of the area. If there are balls on the west side that usually also means it is safe for overnight anchorage.. we like swinging on a ball much better than a anchor. Looks like we will be giving the West side the nod rather than going up Ensenoda Honda.

Great, John. The only other thing I should mention is that there is no fishing allowed in the preserve. I'm told the best fishing is a mile or two further out anyway, but forwarned is forearmed. Get a map that shows the preserve and you'll do fine.

Speaking of fishing - you need a license!

Enjoy Culebra!

Culebrita is not a good to anchor, on the west side you have all that entrance in front of Luis Pena, I have seen some boats anchored at Tamarindo, and to the west side of Luis Pena.

Capt. Guzman,

Our plan was to anchorage just south of Carlos Rosario (map on this site shows an anchorage). Been told the snorkeling in this area is pretty good.

The next day we would rent a jeep and visit the Northern Beahes and see some sights. Thought it would be pretty close form Carlos Rosario or could we dingy into down?

We also thought that Luis Pena would be a short sail for a morning visit and some snorkeling there. We then planed to sail south to Dankity and spend a day in that area.

Then sail to Culebrita and spend the day and anchor in the most Northern anchorage shown also on the map.

We thought we could stay 4/5 days before heading back to St. John.

Any advise is appreciated, we are pretty flexable and open to suggestion.
Thank you all for your advise so far......

John
