Nude sunbathing?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi, I'm planning a visit to Culebra in November, most probably on weekdays. I've read that nude sunbathing is possible in some beaches. Just wondering if that's so. Thanks for your input.

Possible is anything. Whether it's legal is a different matter ;)

Enjoy Culebra!

Playa Carlos Rosario is pretty isolated and empty of people (and families, more importantly). You could probably find a spot on the long, long beach somewhere. Look out for the visiting yachts, though!

Thanks, but I don't find Carlos Rosario Beach on the map, where is it?

Megan,

Carlos Rosario is often called Impact Beach. It's on the western slope of the ridge that forms the western shore of Flamenco. You get there by parking at Flamenco and hike 20 minutes over the hill. That said, it is unusual for Carlos Rosario to be deserted enough to safely be in the buff. I've seen people nude on the adjacent beach (probably one end of Tamarindo), to the south. There is more privacy out at Zoni, at the extreme west end of the beach, and on Luis Pena and Culebrita. As our admin advised, it is done but it is not officially condoned, so be discrete.

Happy frolicking!

Doug

Not only that, but now the road goes all the way to Carlos Rosario ...

Enjoy Culebra!

"There are no nudist facilities (camps and/or beaches) in Puerto Rico. Nudism is illegal in Puerto Rico."

This is, alas, the offical policy taken from the tourism website. As to how strictly this is enforced, I have no information. Puerto Rico tends to have puritanical laws which are generally winked at by the authorities, but more research will tell you whether to err on the side of caution or not. The only other piece of obvious advice I have is--if you do decide to enjoy a nude sub-bath--slather on the sunscreen!

Carlos Rosdario is rather small as far as sand goes. If you go nude there, don't expect other visotrs to keep a consierate distance; they don't have many options. It's a great place though. It seems all of the more remote beaches I used to visit now have houses on or near them.

When I went to Resaca I only saw two other people; One was topless and she was a woman! ( her boyfriend was hiking around in the rocks) The woman did not even notice me walking by ( the sound of the waves cancelled out my foot steps); I did not take a picture except in my mind ( my mind's picture is still very vivid). Doubt very seriously if any authorities will ever hike down to Resaca just to catch a nudist. Go for it! I suggest you wear clothing while hiking down the rock trail to the beach.

yeah, whatever the regulations, nude hiking is really not a good idea.

Michael,

Does the road really go all the way to Carlos Rosario? Does this mean one could drive (or bike) there?

Arroz,

Interesting catch. Maybe it grew over between the time Michael posted that and now. . . ;-)

Happy Diving!

Arroz: not drive or bike - no cars and not always well-maintained, but a clear path without unexploded ordnance.

Richard, you make a very good point. Unexploded ordnance is a problem that too few people are willing to talk about.

Every year, Culebra loses an average of 12.7 tourists to unexploded ordnance, and most of them are nude.

Government guidelines are clear on how to minimize the risk:

1. Stay on established paths.

2. Wear clothes, or at least the bottoms.

3. Wear thick-soled shoes.

4. Run, don't walk.

That's what I do, and I have never had a problem.
