Scott,
There are sharks around the Island but they do not typically attack. The Captain is correct about the channel between Culebra and Culebrita. There is a current that has many hammer heads and other sharks passing through. This spot is not close to the beach, and I am not aware of any of the larger sharks coming into the beach/snorkeling spots.
Unlike the Florida coast, PR does not "over fish" their waters, so the dangerous sharks have no reason to come inland.
