Bringing a car on the ferry
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We will be in Puerto Rico for 2 weeks and will be in Culebra 4 days in the middle. I am thinking of renting a car in San Juan for the entire time and bringing it on the ferry to Culebra. Any thoughts on that? Can you bring cars on the passenger ferry? Do you need a jeep type vehicle for Culebra? Thanks for your help.

I'm not speaking from first-hand knowledge, but everything that I've seen written in this forum indicates that rental car contracts from the big island of Puerto Rico specifically include a clause that nullifies your insurance if you take the rental on the ferry. From talking with my friends who live on Culebra, there are other issues, as well. The fare is expensive, although I can't recall how much. Additionally, I believe they told me that commercial vehicles have first priority, leaving open the possibility for being bumped. Seems like a lot of problems. I'd look at the difference in price to split the rentals between PR and Culebra and weigh the cost vs. the hassle and liability involved. Remember that comfortable publicos are available to take you to the Fajardo and back from San Juan. (I used Padin (787) 644-3091 ). If you're not taking too much stuff, the flight from SJU or Isla Grande is even better.

Hope this helps.

Doug is mostly right.
Rent a Jeep on the island, they'll pick you up at the ferry.

Another point to add to Doug's post - you must make reservations on the ferry in advance, which are hard to come by.

Doug - Padin runs a publico?? I thought it was a private taxi service. Please respond, as we were planning on using Padin in July, but we want a direct taxi service with no stops.

Debbie,

I'm not sure I know the difference. I could be using the term incorrectly. Because of our airline connection, I only had 2 choices when I flew out of Culebra, a very early flight to Isla Grande and an 11 am to Fajardo. Since our friends had seen virtually none of the big island, I decided to fly to Fajardo, where I had arranged for Ilca, Padin's wife to pick us up in her van. Whether it was a taxi or a publico, I'm not sure. It was $65 for the four of us to go from Fajardo to Isla Verde, where we cocktailed at Playita until it was time to go check in at SJU. We were delivered directly to our destination, but I'm not sure if that would have been different had others been along. We didn't care since we had 3 hours leeway, so it wasn't part of the discussion with Ilca. Sorry if I gave bad info.

Heck, me neither! I thought a publico was a van that carts people around the island, but which makes stops along the way (at the concrete shelters you see by the side of the road). My taxi concept is a direct ride from point a to point b. We'll be sure to clarify with Padin when we call for reservations. Thanks!

Happy Diving!

Rented car into Culebra, is like you are wishing to have hard times, very hard times.
Forget about that, rent a jeep, or take publicos.

You will remember all the good advises you have been given, but every person is a different world, maybe you like hard times.
