reassurances needed before the adventure begins
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I’ve been glossing this site for info and now I feel the time has come for me to be the needy, pain in the bum, question asker!

So, without further ado:

Hello, my name is Julie, I’m flying to PR from the US on Saturday (but I’m from Europe) and should be descending on Culebra soon after. I’m friendly and hope to meet you soon.

Unfortunately, I’m a poor student so everything has to be on a shoe-string which means I’m camping. Apart having poor tent skills (how does one secure a tent on sand – using rocks on the inside to weigh it down?!) I am, being serious now, concerned about the safety of camping on my own (me being a young woman). I’m also wondering how to keep my valuables (passport) safe when I go swimming. If there aren’t lockers maybe I could leave it in the safe hands of ...? (maybe the dive shop owners?) Are there any accommodations for $40 or less? Advice on this matter would be really appreciated.

Having minimal $ I’m not going to be able to rent a car and I’m putting all my trust into the publicos. If I’m being foolish please let me know. I’m not sure how they work (do they run on a timetable, physical or metaphysical?) or even where they go from but I expect it to be obvious when I get there?

I also plan to go scuba diving (ok, this is where the budget gets blown!) - I’m a qualified BSAC diver but BSAC don’t issue certification cards like PADI – would the dive shop accept a photocopy of my qualification book? I want to buy a cheap but good enough quality (being able to see the fish in the photos would be swell!) underwater camera – any recommendations? (Debbie?)

I’m not greatly into making reservations in advance and from what I can gather about the island’s relaxed way of life, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, please do tell me if things are going to be choc-a-bloc (with regard to the campsite and diving trips) and I’ll make them.

Is the water safe to drink?

Lastly, and most importantly, where should I go to meet people (locals and travelers)? I hate eating on my own!

Le agredezco un monton por su ayuda, antes de todo perdóname el español horrible, tuve que preguntar a una amiga que lo traduzca esto para mi!
