Trip Review 3/22 - 3/30
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My wife and I had our best trip yet to Culebra over Easter. Those who said it would be busy were somewhat right. It was busy for Culebra, but it didn't feel at all crowded at beaches.
We were taken to the ferry by Mike, who is a great taxi driver. He speaks good english (lived in states for a while) and has a lot of knowledge about Puerto Rico. We even stopped at road side stands along the way for food and coco frio. And on the way back to San Juan at the end of our trip, we took a scenic route around the heavy traffic. He charges a flat rate of $65 for up to 4 people. Very reasonable. His number is 787 564 6176.
Once in Culebra, we stayed at casa robinson. Elias picked us up at the ferry. He was a great host and very accessible whenever we needed anything. Great views from the house. I think he has a website, casarobinson.com. We also received a 10% discount on our jeep rental from Carlos since we were staying at casa robinson. Each room also has direct tv, which came in handy for watching ncaa tournament games late at night.
Snorkeling was great. We saw turtles over at playa soni. Three sting rays, an octopus, squid, and several unique fish along carlos resario.
Probably the only negative experience was at el eden cafe/liquor. We went in at lunch to get some cold sandwiches to go. It took 45 minutes to get two sandwiches. They were busy by Culebra standards (7 or 8 people in the store), so I was patient. I only saw 3-4 other sandwiches made while we were waiting for ours. The guy making them was very slow and seemed unorganized.
The bakery was great as usual. We also liked the groceries and fresh bread they have at the new mini-market that is a block west of the airport entrance. Their hours were much more flexible than other markets.

MW,
I am so glad to hear you had a great trip. El Eden is a bit overpriced too. I hope the old liquor store is running next year I go. Too many people that live there and run businesses don't like the way they are gouging people at the counter. I was actually laughing at a man that had two cases of coors light at the airport. I said to my freind that it would be a pain in the butt to bring over but now I know why he did. No wonder they gave up their diving business to sit on their butts to rip people off!!!!!!!!

MW,
I forgot to tell you that businesses around Culebra are paying $7.00 dollars a case average for water and El Eden is charging $16.00 a case!!!

We had a bad experience with that guy on a trip to culebrita also (a few years ago). He told us to meet him at 9am at his dive shop. I think he showed up around 10 and we finally left by 10:30. It seems like SOME of the state-siders move down there and try to take on the "island-time" lifestyle. But to me, they just look really lazy. The big guy sitting on his butt playing on his laptop at BarbaraRosa's is a good example. I think it is her husband. We stood around trying to eat there one night for 20 minutes, and he didn't even acknowledge us. If he cleared the table he was sitting at, they could make a lot more money and serve more people.

The Puerto Rican business people don't seem to be that way (Carlos Jeeps, Elias from Casa Robinson, Margarita at La Bahia Seafood). La Bahia was great. She was short staffed the night we went, and told us it would be 45 minute wait. But the fact that she told us as soon as we got there was great since we didn't even get a glance at BarbaraRosa's. The snapper was really good at La Bahia. The view of the moon rising over the bay was great from up there. Prices were much better than other seafood on the island too.

We've been reading about others experiences so I thought we should share ours too. This was our second trip to Culebra. Last year there was just 2 of us but this year we had 5 including our 12 and 14 year old daughters. This time instead of flying to the island we took the ferry. I arranged to have a taxi from Padin pick us up at the airport. Our driver was Tito on the way to Fajardo and Ilca on the return. Both drivers were very friendly and informative. We stayed at Campo Alto and were very impressed. The house is about half way up the hill on the road to Resaca. Campo Alto has 2 bedrooms a large fully equipped kitchen a TV, VCR, and DVD player and views were awesome. Merry Jane, the owner was very kind. We took the last ferry to the island so we got in late. She arranged to pick up our jeep rental and meet us at the dock. We rented a jeep from Jerry's and will continue to do so every time we visit. T.he food at Barbara Rosa's was excellent as usual, as was El Patio. I felt Dinghy Dock and Coconuts were a little over priced this time , but that may be because we were paying for such a large group. The biggest disappointment was at El Edan. I paid $9 for a 6 pack of Medalia so that was our one and only visit.

jeanr,
I thought the same thing this past trip to Culebra. El Eden is a total ripoff. Everything is over priced. If anyone wants a better deal go to the old liquor store by the ferry dock. When I was there they were under new ownership, I think, and I was told by many locals to buy there. Come on, a six pack of Medalla for $9.00 and a case of water for $16.00. I will never ever buy there again!!!!
