Culebra? Vieques?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi! This is such a great site! My boyfriend and I are planning a long weekend trip to either Vieches or Isla Culebra at the end of May. I'm leaning towards Culebra...here are my plans so far;

Take taxi from San Juan
Take passenger ferry from Fajardo
Rent a scooter near Ferry dock in Culebra
Stay in small hotel on the island...

Can someone give me their opinion of this plan? I want to be as economical as I can, but still want easy Island access, and a nice place to stay (with a pool if possible!)

Trust me, you don't need a pool... Go to Culebra.
Rent a beat up Susuki 4x4 instead, not a scooter.

Small tip : Rent an Avis Car from SJU to the Conquistador resort in Fajardo
then taxi to the terminal. Rental is $35 and you can have the car all
day and check out the rain forest (or old San Juan) before you get on the ferry.

Villa Fulladoza is my favorite place to stay on the island. Take the
more expensive apartments at $80 a night. Very cool place.

Peace out.

I agree that you do not need a pool, just very few lodgings in CUlebra have it, and they are very expensive, and you are trying to save.
About the rental car, I believe you will be wasting time in paper work for the least.
Take the taxi directly to the ferry dock, be there at least 1 1/2 hour before departure.
Small hotels, my choice is Villa Boheme, they have A/C, Fulladoza does not, and it is in the same price range.
I do not believe that no one should be paying 5 stars prices in Culebra, so go for anything less that 120.00 and you'll be fine.
Villa Boheme is a small hotel, with great people there, it is clean, has washrooms in the patio, a great view, and it is waterfront.
They keep a community, full equiped kitchen for guests, and it is walking distance from mostly everyithing you need, from groceries to restaurants, bars, and ferry dock.

Nice stay...

This is all very helpful!
So, I assume on Culebra renting bikes will be a suitable way to get around as well. I don't mind the exercise, and will only be going from beach to beach...
I know a jeep is recommended, but I was told the same thing when I recently went to St. John in the US Virgin Islands, and we were fine using the local taxis..

Thanks all!

Hi Hali,
I know you're all decided, but I just got back from 3 days in February and we spent 2 nights on Culebra and one night on Vieques. If I had to plan a long weekend, I'd opt for Vieques - the Bio Bay experience there is a very Romantic one, especially if you go by kayak around the new moon, so check for that, and go with the Aquafrenzy group. The town in the south is very Bohemian and lively, and you can drive to some nice beaches. Bananas has some great food and an amazing sunset. The only thing that would draw me back to Culebra at this point, would be the Turtle watch during nesting season (March to May, I think) and a visit to Culebrita. Either way, you won't be disappointed as both islands are lovely ... maybe we felt more for Vieques because we didn't get enough time there as we only came to see the Bio Bay and didn't realise how much we'd like that island as well :).
