Cell phone signals
Culebra, Puerto Rico
Author: Doug (---.dsl.stlsmo.swbell.net)

This topic has been discussed in the past, but I've forgotten what I learned. I have Sprint PCS and my wife has Cingular. Does Culebra have service for either or both of these cellphones? Do you have to go to a special part of the island to use them?

Thanks,
Doug

Both will work on most parts of the island. Cingular might have better reception in the Zoni area, due to GMS. Both will be weak at Seabourne.

Enjoy Culebra!

If you get to rent a boat, do not settle for anything less than a VHF radio, celular phones do not work good, or anything at all while at sea.
Ask for VHF radio with a good antena, call signs and procedures, they may help save your life.
Anybody can ask for a VHF radio check with VI radio on channel 85, or even 16. Wait for an answer, if an answer is not received after two tries, wait 5 minutes and repeat you call.
Example VI radio, VI radio, VI radio, THIS IS " YOUR NAME or VESEL REG. ID " RADIO CHECK PLEASE...
When answered say ... THANKs THIS IS " YOUR NAME / VESSEL NAME " and STAND BY ON CHANNEL 16 or 85.
Also ask for a set of Flare gun with not expired set of at least three flares.
A first aid kit, with aspirin, acetaminofen, BENADRYL, SUN BLOCK, GAUZES, Band/Aid, a cooler with ice, water, insect repellant, and very important... an all around white light, or a flash light, as they may be of great importance should any emergency occur.
SMOKE, LOUD SOUNDS of more than 4 blasts AT TWO OR THREE MINUTES INERVALS, A FLAG HOISTED BACKWARDS, HANDS WAVING, RED FLARES, A SUN SHINNING OBJECT, are indication of distress.
I might be willing to post more on security as long as these are needed.

Culebra Boat Rental (http://www.culebraboatrental.com) provides a cell phone on each rental motorboat. The carrier service is Cingular. From testing and from experience, we have found that the signal is steady and reliable. Generally, calls can be received and transmitted everywhere in the allowable boating area, which is within about one mile of Culebra. Important phone numbers (CBR phones, police, coast guard) are memorized and on speed dial, so renters are assured of having those critical numbers when needed.

Sprint PCS works fine even on Carlos Rosario
but again, leave the phone at home.

Do I have to do anything with my Cingular account before I leave home or will it work there just like going to another state? Anyone have experience with this?

I am with you in spirit, Jacques. It usually stays in my suitcase, but this trip I need to re-confirm my publico ride back to San Juan from Fajardo, and I gave the driver my number. After that's done, I lose the cell.

Our family has both sprint and Cingular and never had a reception problem on the island. No need to do anything to your account, everything will work fine. I have to agree with another comment, however, leave your phone a good distance away...Culebra is way to beautiful for any distractions.
