February 2018
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We are 2 families who had planed for our winter break to visit Culebra (had reserved lodging on VRBO) and wanted to see how things were. We want to be respectful of the people of Culebra and not adding to a burden or vacationing in the midst of hardship. We are 4 adults, 2 teenagers (17) and 2 smaller children 5yo and 8 yo. We'd be willing to do some service projects during the week as well. Any advice welcome on if we would be a burden or disrespectful by coming or if we should continue in our plans.

I'm going down this Saturday for 10 days. Right now there is power from 6:30pm to 6:30am which will be fine for us. you can check the "culebra noticas" facebook page for current updates on the ground. They need tourism to get back on their feet. Bring cash as I believe credits cards don't work.

So we went down for 10 days. Flew out of SJU on VAL/Seaborne. The terminal is on the upper deck to the left of the American terminal. Arrive at least an hour before you scheduled flight and just wait for the guy.If the house you are staying in you can get water from 6:30pm -> 6:30am. We filled 5 gallon buckets and water jugs to be used in the day. The water buckets sitting out all day get up to 96 degrees for you to bath in. your place will need a gas grill if you wish to cook before that. It's dark at 55 so you will be in the dark for a while. will need to bring flashlights. bucket can be used to fill back of toilet if needed in the daytime. Only went out to Coconuts for dinner, open 7-10. Heathers will be closed for a month. Milka's now taking credit cards. FEMA hooked him up a wifi connection. No wifi at Zoni. I believe they do in town. ATT cell service now working in town so everyone stopped driving out to Zoni to make calls and text. Zoni beach is still beautiful. was there for many days by ourselves. Dave Gonzalez took us over to Culebrita and the beach was fanaminal. fuel barge brings 20,000 gallon diesel tanks in the ha onda and they are stored at the airport. All grocery stores were stocked. Gas station was no problem. So for us we had a great time and the locals seemed to want tourist back so they can get back to work. I kept hear that the electric hookup was "close" but who knows. if you can deal with no power in the day then it's worth going.

Thanks sooooo much for the detailed update, Geronimo!!

Just spoke to Jerry's Jeeps and made our reservations for April :)

Hoping to book Seaborn as soon as they post flights for April.

BTW, what ticket tier did you get on Seaborn and what does it include/exclude in plain English? The web site legalize description of each tier is confusing.

I do not think there is a difference in ticket tier on the plane. Everyone is on the same little plane. I think as they mark the $99 ones as sold out and try to get the higher price. So there appeared to me to be no difference. I think we got a different one going each way but the flight is the same.

Thank you to everyone for your replies. We kept our tickets and are excited to come.

Any advice anyone has on what we might need to bring/expect especially for our 5 yo and 7 year old would be appreciated.

thank you so much and happy new year.

best, Ann
