Cell and Wifi speeds
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Considering a week or two on Culebra ... a research vacation in advance of possible retirement in a few years. (We are Midwest rural folks for whom the comparative simplicity of Culebra is attractive.) Vacation for me, but my wife would telecommute if speeds are sufficient. What are typical internet speeds on public or rental wifi? Or we could use a Verizon cellphone as a wifi hotspot ... What are typical cell speeds? (Found coverage info on forum but not recent speed info.) Thanks in advance, thanks for the forum insights on all things Culebrese, and kudos for keeping Culebra fresh and friendly.

Hello- I also use Verizon Wireless. WiFi can be ify on Culebra. If you stay in or near town reception is better. I would highly recommend the apartment at the Dinghy Dock. You can view pictures and read reviews on Air B&B. They recently wired the apartment for WiFi and it is as good as it gets in the Island.

Thanks Morris! Do you know what kind of connection speed you get on your Verizon cell phone, in case we would use it as a wifi hotspot away from town? We might prefer to rent a rural place to get a better feel for our preferred lifestyle.

I never did a speed test, but we watched streamed content pretty much every day when cruising around Culebra. The only issue I had was that it is tricky to point a parabolic antenna properly (you can amplify any signal that way). On land you can even put your phone into a metal bowl and point it to St. Thomas, when on the 'dark' side of Culebra. Find out what boaters do and you will get your answer. Sometimes I just hoisted the mifi up on the mast ..
You can get decent reception, depending on your tenacity! If in line of sight of main tower in the bay, it's easy - wifi or cell.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Wifi is pretty good most places. I don't know how to do a speed test. If you tell me how, I'm happy to do one at my house as well as at several of my rental homes.

Verizon really only works downtown & by airport. If moving here, I highly recommend AT&T, they have the most comprehensive coverage on the island - even out to Zoni though you will always have black spots out there & up in the hills. Verizon is no good outside of town and Sprint gets lost about 1/2 way to Zoni

The main Wifi provider here is OSNet Wireless - not sure if they can help but you always try their tech help 787-655-1919

The only time you really need good speed is for streaming. E.g. HD quality on netflix requires 5mb/s. See https://help.netflix.com/en/node/306

For 'working' you don't need a fraction of that!

Enjoy Culebra!
