Culebrita or Luis Peña
Culebra, Puerto Rico

We want to visit one or both of these islands while visiting Culebra.
We have previously visited Culebrita, and with the light house, and beaches, it was beautiful. But we didn't visit Luis Peña last time, and wonder if we should this time?
If you could only visit one of these islands, which one would you pick?
Or would you make the effort to visit them both?
We've got time, and can earn the extra bucks to afford both, if we have too.

thanks

Depends on .....

1) how you plan to get there

2) what activities you would like to do while on either island

3) what the winds are up to.

I've been to both. Kayaked all the times we've gone. We let the winds determine which we went to.

Culebrita definitely has the nicest beach of the two. Luis Pena, from my experience has the better snorkeling with some great underwater fauna.

Culebrita may offer some good trails for hiking around. Luis Pena, I still want to explore some before I say which is better for hiking. Most people probably would say Culebrita is better for the hikes.

Both are quite different from each other, with Luis Pena have smaller more intimate type beaches.

we would take a water taxi, i imagine. i hadnt thought about taking a kayak. we are novices with the kayak. Thus i never thought of the wind being a factor.

once on the island, do whatever there is to do on the island. For me, hiking and exploring. for my girls, they are happy plopping down on the sand for hours on end.

We explored Culebrita, and sat on beaches and snorkeled. If LP has better snorkel, thats a reason to try it out.

thanks

Here's a link to map I made of some of our activities. It has some photos and videos linked in by location. It could give you some ideas on what to do.

Hi Tim,

The map you made up is very nice and I can see how it would be very helpful to first time visitors. In that vein, it doesn't look like you are aware that the dock at Puerto Manglar is a private dock for use by the people in that neighborhood only. There are signs posted as such there, but it would be best if you removed it from your map for any future visitors that might be checking out your link.

Thanks!

Sue

Do the signs say that you can't take a picture of the dock? How silly.

No Drew, the signs actually say it's private property, so technically even going to the dock to take a silly picture is trespassing. But I was actually referencing Tim's info box related to Puerto Manglar. In it, he recommends going to the dock during the day to get reference and then coming back on a moonless night to go into the water from the dock to see bioluminescence. Just don't want any uninformed new visitors to get the wrong idea that the dock is for public use.

Sue,

Very good point. I certainly don't want to encourage people to trespass on the property of others. I've got plenty of other nice photos of places people can visit to experience Culebra. Thanks for noticing this and letting me know.

Hi Sue,

Maybe I am misinformed. My understanding of the law in Culebra is that the shoreline along the entire island is public property. So that you could circumnavigate the island along the shore and never be trespassing. I sense you have a strong opinion about this, I'll be interested to hear.

and please don't mis-characterize me, I certainly wouldn't trespass on anyone's property. what I'm saying is that even if the surrounding land is private, you could walk the shore from, say, the dock at long beach around to the dock at manglar and you would not be trespassing.

If you prove me wrong I'll be happy to eat crow.

also, Tim...cool map!

Drew/Sue,

Drew, I have been told the same about the shoreline of Culebra, Culebrita, Luis Pena, Cayo Norte and other land masses around Culebra by one of the charter captains in Culebra. He even added to that by saying that there was a certain number of feet above the water line that was included in the right of access. I can't recall the number of feet, but 10 feet comes to mind. As I have not seen the official code for this I cannot vouch for the authenticity. But it does seem to be the way things operate. Also, in regards to kayaking and swimming at the access point I had on the map, we looked at several rentals that mention that the dock is nearby. But we stayed elsewhere and were taken there by one of the local kayak rental outfits. They seemed very legitimate, took no measure to hide the activity, placed glow sticks on the dock so we could find our way back and suggested we swim to get the full experience. Oddly enough, our guides did not want to get in the water. Seemed to have a fear of it. Most of us dove right in. And it was a very amazing experience. Especially while swimming with the mask and snorkel. If it is still permitted, I would recommend the people check with the kayak rental outfits to see if Manglar access is available there or anywhere else.

Tim and Drew,

From what I know, without having seen any written law either, the shoreline is indeed open to the public, so yes you could walk from the dock at Playa Larga to the dock at Puerto Manglar. However, you cannot go through private property to access it, there must be some type of right of way or easement, as there is for Playa Larga. The property accessing the Manglar dock and the dock itself is private property, owned and maintained by the neighborhood association, so it is trespassing unless you happen to be staying in one of the rentals in that neighborhood. As Drew said, there are a few rentals in that neighborhood and access to that dock is most likely mentioned in their description.

It sounds like you are both pretty familiar with that area, do you know the large house and property with the dock at the base of the bay? Though you could walk along their shoreline, you can't drive through their property (if there wasn't a gate) to get to the shoreline or use their dock. Same thing with the Manglar dock, it just doesn't have a house or gates.

Tim, do you remember which kayak rental outfit you used that took you out there? My guess is that they may have been using it until someone told them not to, which I would think has happened since then. As with so many things down there, doing something that isn't exactly kosher isn't a problem until it becomes a problem. Which is why I wouldn't want to see any kind of "ad" or map, whether official or not, recommending visitors to access the bay by this dock. Tim's map could go viral and then what? haha
