Sailing West from St. Thomas
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I've enjoyed sailing in the USVI and BVIs on multiple trips - we rent a sailboat and liveaboard. Next trip for me is June 4 to June 14 and am thinking of heading West this time from the base in St. Thomas down your way.

What are the best harbors to anchor in and visit Culebra? We'll have a 37' sailboat and needs 5' of water to still float. Any days to avoid like holidays or weekends during my timeframe? I have heard you get swarmed on weekends.

Thanks in advance for your help Michael.

Best,

Art

Art, welcome to the forum!

There's a link to the chart under 'maps'. Also I personally use google earth a lot to navigate and see where it could be nice. You will be stunned by Culebra in comparison to the VI's!

Explore! If one anchorage is to full, sail 20min and go to the next. 10 days is barely enough to round the island ;)

Which company do you use in St.Thomas (that lets you take the boat to PR..)?

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

I am chartering the boat from Island Yacht Charters (IYC) in Red Hook. They provide a packet of suggested itineraries including a plan to tour the Spanish Virgin Islands. IYC is OK with bareboat charter customers taking their boats to Culebra and Vieques.

This article gave me the inspiration to start planning our trip west from St. Thomas:

See you in June.

Michael,

Let me know how to send you a PDF file of IYC itinerary for their customers voyaging to Culebra. I would be interested in getting your take on their Culebra destinations, anchorages and shoreside suggested activities.

Art, my email address is in my profile.

I do not believe in schedules when on a boat (unless it's more than 500tons ..). The weather should be your guiding factor. One anchorage might be great in calm weather and not so in northerlies .. In June you should be able to get into (and stay in) Flamenco, which is hard during the winter!

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael
