If we purchase ferry tickets online from Fajardo to Culebra, will there still be long waits at the Ferry? Are there certain cut offs on the amount of ppl to go to and from the island?

The line at the reservation desk is usually very short (no more than 5 min wait). The one at the ticket booth can be 3 hours.

Enjoy Culebra!

I pre purchased my tickets here! Highly recommend spending the extra to ensure you get on. We drove from Isla Verde to Fajardo on 4/22/14, because of traffic, we arrived at the ferry terminal much later than we expected (about 8:40 am, for the 9 am ferry). Upon arrival, all I did was show one of the officers a picture of the ticket Jim provides and she pointed me to the line, but there wasn't anyone in line! Perfect!! I got my new tickets and was in line to board the ferry in 5 min. The ferry, on the other hand, was late and didn't leave until 9:45. One child got sea sick on the ferry. I didn't think it was as bad as some of the reviews I read about rough seas. We had a beautiful day on Flamenco Beach. It is more beautiful than any picture I've seen and worth the ferry hassles to get there! Our return Ferry back to Fajardo departed on time.

Hi,

If I purchase the online ticket, is that a confirmation that I actually have a ticket and that I don't have to wait 3 hours in line? I read many places whee the online purchase may not be an actual confirmation yet. I understand that I still have to go to another window to pick up my ticket, but I wanted to confirm that I do not have to wake up at 4am to wait in line!

You buy the ticket online. Then a person goes and purchases the tickets. If sold out, you get a refund. Ifpurchased you get confirmation number and only have to be at the ferry 30 min prior to departure!

Enjoy Culebra!

Just because you have a ticket doesn't mean you get to board. Trust me, I've been left behind with a ticket in my hand and next in line to board because the ferry was full.

Debbie,

So is there a way to increase the likelihood of not having to get left behind? Such as showing up 1.5-2hrs before departure and having one person wait by the boarding area to be the 1st few in line, while the other person go pick up the advanced purchase ticket?

Also, would it help if I do the cargo ferry at 4am?

Getting the 4 AM ferry definitely will put you ahead of the game :)

Right now you can purchase tickets at culebraferry.com min 1 week in advance. Someone needs to go there buy them etc etc.

Enjoy Culebra!

No, Sam, the whole ferry system is a crap shoot. Sorry to be so blunt, but it is not reliable at all. Best to fly air flamenco or vieques air link from Ceiba ($44 one way).

Happy Diving!

I have a couple questions.

I see on the website I can only order 6 ferry tickets at a time. We are a group of 8 (including one 5 year old) and would obviously only want to go if everyone can go. Is it possible to order more than 6 ferry tickets in advance?

Also, if we wanted to make just a day trip to Culebra from Fajardo is it possible to make sure we could get tickets in both directions before making an official purchase? For example, I don't want tickets for the 9am ferry to Culebra in the morning, unless I can be sure I can have tickets for the 5pm ferry back to Fajardo the same day.

Or would you not recommend taking the ferry for day trips?

Thanks for this forum. It's a great resource!

Before you buy you can try to do so - if one of the departures is blocked, you cannot book!

We generally discourage daytrips!

Enjoy Culebra!

Remember, you can only book tickets a minimum of 10 days in advance on our site. So if you cannot book and it's less than 10 days, it does not mean it's sold out, just the logisitcs of our operation do not permit enough time to buy tickets, let you know and you still have enough time to make alternate plans, in case the advance tickets (only 50 per departure) are indeed sold out.

Hi there!
Would I be able to purchase tickets this much in advance for August 3rd? I wouldn't want to pay the extra amount and not be guaranteed boarding... We would only need one way tickets from Culebra to Fajardo, since we'll be flying from Vieques to Culebra and then making our way back to Fajardo via Culebra.

Thank you!

2nd part to my question:

Do we need to get advance tickets for the Culebra-Fajardo Ferry? Or are the lines really bad there, too. We would want to take the 1pm ferry. :)

Thank you!!

Hi Michael! Thanks so much for your response! I can see you are the Culebra expert here, so I will trust your advice. :) So even on August 3rd, we shouldn't have a problem at all? My friend and I don't mind paying $10 instead of the $2.25 if we have to, just to avoid any headaches or plan derailments. But I will trust your advice if you say we don't need them. I definitely prefer to get there 15-30 mins before rather than 3 hours, since we've never been to Culebra and only have one night there (I know... silly decision!) Thanks again!! Please let me know what you think. :)

Lulita,

Michael's advice is pretty sound as far as the ferry and Culebra goes. But, you need to take into account all the things before you get to the ferry dock in Fajardo. The biggest issue could be getting to the ferry dock in a reasonable time to buy your tickets. We had delays in flying to San Juan that changed everything. Some of us were flying to Culebra from Ceiba. Some were taking the ferry from Fajardo. All of that changed when Miami decided to try their new radar. So, just make sure you have enough time to get to the ferry that takes into account all the delays the airlines can throw at you. Based on experience, we have found it best to be on the big island at least a day before trying to get to Culebra. Whether you rent a car or have a local driver take you, is usually not a problem if you are there the day or more before. We had a 3 hours to get from San Juan to Fajardo disappear due to airline issues. Keep this in mind for your travel plans.

Hi Tim!

Wow! So sorry about what happened to you guys!! Thank goodness, we'll actually be on the main island for about 4 days before we get to Fajardo for our Ferry and we'll be taking the ferry first to Vieques, then flying to Culebra from Vieques, then taking the ferry again from Culebra to Fajardo, which was the ride that was concerning me the most because of timings, etc.

Thanks so much for letting me know about those issues, though, cause you are helping me avoid any further headaches!

Hope you enjoyed your trip!!
