Camping...safety/theft, bus ?, reservations?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hi all,
I am getting very excited for an upcoming trip to the island in a couple of weeks...camping at Flamenco, swimming, snorkeling, relaxing, hiking, and exploring!! I am wondering if there are any issues with theft in the campground during the day when leaving tent/gear unattended to go off exploring (will not have a car to lock things in). Any special safety concerns for women traveling solo?

I am getting mixed info regarding whether camping reservations are required/necessary. Tips? Haven't had luck getting through via telephone yet...will keep trying though!

Also, do the busses run or are taxis generally available into the evening hours? Wondering about logistics in terms of being able to go to town at the end of the day and still get back out to the campground after dark (not super late...maybe returning 8-9 or so.).

Thanks so much!

Rue

Hi Rue,

I have camped on Flamenco many times, just returned three weeks ago from a two week stay. March is my favorite time on Culebra. It gets very busy during Holy Week (Easter). The week prior to Holy week there wasn't too many people, and the week after Holy week I had the entire camp area to myself.

You do not need reservations for camping, there will always be space, even during the busiest times. The camp caretakers (Henry and Jose) are only in the office in the morning and early afternoon, so it will be difficult, to impossible to reach them by phone. Don't worry if when you get there that the camp office is closed. Just find a place in a designated camp area and set up your tent. The next morning go to the camp office and pay (usually they are there around 7:30 am). They will walk through the camp area between 6:30 and 7:15 am and leave notes on the "new tent arrivals" to pass by the office and pay.

I travel solo when visiting Culebra and have never had a problem with anything being stolen from my camp area. I do recommend that you keep your valuables, cell-phone, money, passport, out of site (Put them in a large ziplock bag and burry them, or place them under your tent). I also recommend, if possible, to make friends with persons camping near you so that you can all kinda "keep an eye out" to watch over each others things.

Culebra is my absolute favorite place for camping. You are soooo lucky to be going there soon. Enjoy ;0)

As for taxi's "Publicos" they are going back and forth to Flamenco and town all day and evening from about 8:30am to about 9:00pm. You can get the phone number of a drive and they will pick you up when you call, whether in town or at Flamenco. Cost is $3 each, each way.

There have been times I've been stuck at Flamenco or in town at night without a ride, so I've walked it many times (I keep a headlamp with me). Its only about a 2 mile distance and takes about 35 min.

Hello Rue,
So how was your solo camping experience? I will be camping there soon as a solo female, I would really like to hear about your time camping in Culebra.

Thanks,

I will be going to Culebra in April / May 2014. This will be my eighth time on the island camping, and usually travel solo. As has been mentioned previously, most campers on Flamenco are friendly. While camping there, I've met people from all over the world, Germany, Sweden, Poland, UK, Canada, Italy etc. Getting to know your camping "neighbors" is helpful in that you can "keep and eye" on each other's camp sight. Plus, its just fun to meet people and talk about the days adventures. If you have specific questions about camping on Flamenco I'd be happy to try and answer them for you. I'm sure you will really enjoy culebra ;) Dave B
