Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello, We are visiting Culebra for the 2nd time in the middle of March. We love relaxing on the beaches but we are also hoping to find a place to rent jet skis if available. I appreciate any helpful knowledge. Thank you!

Hop a plane to Cancun, instead.

Maybe you can find a way to combine 'relaxing on the beach' with jet skis. It seems the general consensus on Culebra is, that those 2 are not easily combined ... Imagine yourself laying on a peacuful beach and 2 guys racing up and down the beach, trying to pick up customers ... It has its place, but Culebra is - in most people's opinion - not the right place for it.

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Well thank you for the responses. It was just a question of whether is was available. However I am really shocked by the negative responses the question received. No big deal. I still LOVE the island the way it is. It's why I keep coming back.

I'm sure no one meant to shock you. It's just that you have to understand the Culebra mindset. It's like asking, why aren’t there any major hotel chains in Culebra? You see, there are rich, greedy, evil forces at work trying to turn Culebra into some kind of flashy St. Thomas or something like that, crowded, noisy, and polluted. People in Culebra and everywhere are working hard fighting against these evil forces. It's getting harder to keep Culebra out of their sights. So you see jet skis are cool in Cancun because that's what you go there for. But Culebra is slow and quiet and people like it that way. So no jet skis please.

I completely respect that view and would never want Culebra to fall prey to those evil forces! Thanks for the explanation. Its is very much appreciated. Thanks again!

When we were on Culebra the summer of 2010, while on Melones, well over 100 jet skis came roaring over from mainland Culebra. They were followed by several tag boats. It was very distracting and I am so thankful there are no jet ski rentals on beautiful Culebra, unless someone there privately owns one.

Wow! That must have been ... I can't even imagine what that was like! I would have thought it was some kind of invasion. What were they doing there??? In summer, isn't that when the turtles breed or the babies hatch? It must have been some kind of convention, I can't imagine what. Did they come over from Vieques or Fajardo?

I've known a few (very few) people who use a jet ski in a responsible manner, and Lonnie, you may be one of those folks. Unfortunately, the vast majority of people on jet skis seem to be young males blessed with an overabundance of testosterone, who enjoy the thrill of going as fast as possible, doing 180-degree turns at high speeds, and jumping the wake of any boat they can find. I have seen them harass nesting waterfowl, swamp canoes, disrupt family fishing trips, and just be generally annoying to those trying to enjoy a peaceful day on or near the water. With coral just below the surface, divers, snorkelers, and sea turtles and other sea life in the shallow waters around Culebra, the potential for disaster is too great, in my opinion. I can see the appeal of a jet ski to go to Culebrita or Luis Pena, but for every responsible jet ski operator who would travel at a reasonable speed and watch out for people and other creatures, I can imagine there are 50 of the other type, and I surely hope they would not invade the peaceful waters around Culebra! There are plenty of places where jet skis are more appropriate and welcome, and precious few places in the Caribbean as unspoiled and undeveloped as Culebra.

Jeff and Mary, it was a sight to behold!! I meant to say they were coming over from mainland PR, the big island. Just a Sunday outing of some sort. Caused quite a bit of uproar on the island. All restraunts swamped, etc. We were shocked to see them. We heard lots of complaints around the island about them all being on the island. We got back to Casa Del Sol where we stayed and lots of them had gone under the bridge and on over to the bay like area and over to Dakity. We could see them from our rental. They were gone later on Sunday. We were glad to see them go!

While there are no places to rent jet skis there are jet ski "tours" which claim to be ecological tours with snorkeling (there was a previous thread on this). About the young males, up until a few weeks ago I would have agreed with this but then I found out that my daughter-in-law (late 30s) had rented a jet ski while on the big island and really enjoyed herself :-)

Jet skis and culebra do not mix. They are offensive in every way. If you want them then you don't get Culebra...it's quiet and should so remain.

yeah, sorry Lonnie, I get it was idle curiosity, but if you want some rip-roaring jet-ski fun come drop a few bucks at Lake of the Ozarks. those babies DO look like a blast, and a place like that is more used to, and equipped for, the situation.

now what looks like good fun on Culebra is kite-surfing off Zoni. I'd like to try that and only because I'd know that when I inevitably pissed myself, it'd be over water that would soon camouflage my uhh 'moment' on crashing.

I have observed the jetski operation on Culebra many times...they do NOT belong over turtle grounds or close to shore, regardless of who is operating them. Sometimes this business's jetskis are well-behaved and go slowly over fragile areas; other times they scream across the bay, back and forth, making bad noise and putting swimmers, coral and sealife at peril. They should NEVEV be near the habitat they frequent at Tamarindo Bay
