That is a quest that you would start in Culebra and end in Mayaguez. Drink plenty of Medalla along the way. You can't get it anywhere else. Well, there's Don Q dark and Bacardi 8 and Bacadrdi Anejo and Bacardi Oakheart which are all very good but really don't compare to something like Plantation from Barbados. There may be a similar rum to Plantation made in Puerto Rico but as I said that will be your quest to find. Enjoy!

For sipping, I recommend Barrilito 3 star. For cocktails, Barrilito 2 star.

I believe there are still folks out there who would consider Bacardi a Cuban rum (even though it's now a Bermudian company and the founder, of course, was a Spaniard ;)) Any which way, even though most likely produced in PR, if sold in PR, the company today can hardly be considered Puerto Rican - IMO

Enjoy Culebra!

Michael

Yes, this is true. Are there any Puerto Rican rum companies that produce their run in Puerto Rico?

I second the motion for Barralito as one of the best rums on the island and has been for more than 50 years.

Ok guys, as much as I love Puerto Rico and especially Culebra and also rum, and after getting a bottle and trying it out, I'm sorry to say Barrilito 3 star is not what I would consider sipping rum. I'm sorry, it is just too harsh. In fact, I would say regular Bacardi Gold is smoother. I would recommend rum from Barbados like Plantation Grand Reserve. It's less expensive and very smooth. Next I’m going to pick up some Don Q and try that out.

If you want a really smooth, but really smooth sipping rum, the best I've ever had was Ron Centenario from Guatemala. Never found anything like it. Of course it's close to $40 a bottle

Thanks, I will have to check that one out. There are a number of fine rums from Guatemala including Zaya Gran Reserva and Botran Reserva Anejo. I'm not too much of a fan of sweet though. I tried one called Pyrat which was supposed to be from Antigua & Barbuda however the bottle said Guyana. In any case, it was very sweet and I didn't care for it too much. Another one I found to be very good was Matusalem Gran Reserva originally from Cuba, like Bacardi. Hmm, I think when I retire to Culebra I will be sure to stock the Dinghy Dock bar with lots of good rums for everyone to share.

Well, so far when it comes to really dark rum like Myers from Jamaica, I haven't found anything better. I tried Gosling's from Bermuda but Myers is better. However, I will keep searching because that is were the fun is.

I have discovered Trigo Reserva Aneja Rum made in Puerto Rico. I found this at one of the gift shops in SJU (San Juan airport). It is a very smooth sipping rum. It is among the best I have ever had. I'm sure everyone will enjoy this very smooth rum and it is a bargin.
