We stayed at Tamarindo Estates, which is on the west side of the island, very nice, quiet, and private. I would call it averaged priced and the snorkeling beach is a short walk down the hill and the sea turtles are in the sea grass. A little north of there is Carlos Rosario and an area called The Wall for great snorkeling. However, I would say that there are lots of great snorkeling spots so no matter what, you can't go wrong wherever you stay. If you want really cheap you can't beat camping. You’ll be out of town, actually on Flemenco beach, and a short walk from Carlos Rosario. I would check with Terri for more info on the south side of the island.
