Car size for Puerto Rico
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I seek recommodation regarding rental car size. Some travel sites claim that it is a good idea to rent the smallest possible car that you can fit in. Will a full size car be too big to get around the main island????

The roads on the main island can accomodate any size car, it's just a matter of what you're comfortable with and how much you want to spend for the car and gas. Personally I tend to go with the smallest that will accomodate us. I'd rather spend my hard-earned $ on other things that bring me more enjoyment.

On Culebra, a 4-wheel drive vehicle is advisable, and most rental vehicles on the island are 4WD. I did see a Smart Car at Zoni -- I suppose it was small enough to drive around the crater in the road, and if it did go in a couple people could probably lift it out.

Linda,

I agree, small is best. The crater is gone...a major road project was completed last year. Also, there are plenty of narrow roads on the big island of PR, especially in Old San Juan. Not a good place to drive a Hummer.

Doug,

True -- I had forgotten about the narrow streets in Old San Juan, and the dearth of parking. Glad to hear the crater is gone. Hopefully we will make it back to Culebra this year. St. John and the BVIs were nice, but we love Culebra!

If you get a rental they have EZpass installed to go through the tolls at high speed. The rub is once you activate it on your first toll they will charge you $3/day whether you use it or not for your rental duration. And that's on top of the tolls. And don't pay the toll manually because it will also charge you for the toll electronically. If you never go though a toll you will not be charged. But if you get on say Rt66 you will be charged. I think that's a DoT fund raiser.

I have a question...If I rent a car in San Juan and make my way over to Fajardo...Is there anywhere to leave the car for a couple days before heading over to Culebra?? Or should I turn it in and then when coming back rent one again?(garage, or anything) Any suggestions?

You can park the car in a lot by the ferry terminal for $5/day.
