golf carts vs thing

Hello. We tried renting a jeep but none were available for our week. We reserved a golf cart but are having second thoughts. What will be our limitations with a golf cart? Can they make it up and down the dirt roads? We realize we cannot leave anything in them since no way of locking up. How would a golf car compare with a Volkswagen Thing for ability to travel on rougher roads? Does the thing have windows that roll up and can it be locked?
