Flight Connection
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Greetings!
Traveling to Culebra April 6-15th. Question regarding our return flight connection. We depart Culebra on the 1st available flight at 10:30 am on Vieques Air Link arriving at Isla Grande Airport at 11:00 am. Our flight out of San Juan on Jet Blue departs at 12:45 pm. We want to be sure we have enough time to get between airports, check bag & security line during that 1 hour 40 min. window. Going down we have a 2 1/2 hour window. Since it's our 1st time traveling to Culebra, not yet sure of the airport situation. Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.

Michelle and Nick

You should be fine, just don't doddle.

Peace out

I dont know.
thats assuming your flight off the island leaves on time. assuming it does, its 20 to 30 minutes airport to airport. that leaves you about an hour and fifteen minutes. that should be enough time. but if the lines are long going through security it will be tight. and if you are checking bags, it could take time if alot of people are flying.
chances are that you will be fine. especially if you only have carry on. but its close.

We have a similar situation for our trip later this month, but we chose to sign up for the 8 AM VAL flight out of Culebra, just to be sure we made our flight home.

Thanks so much Robin, Frank & Herb,
I just checked VAL and they do not have the 8:00 am flight on Sunday. But like you said if we hustle we should be fine. The agent thought we had enough time. We shall see. We typically do carry-on but b/c we have more beach gear on this trip, we'll be checking our bag.
We're very excited as this will be our 1st time in Culebra. Hope you have a great time, Robin!

That's very close. Sundays are quite busy at SJU as it is a big departure day for cruise passengers. Additionally, don't forget that all bags must go through FDA inspection before they can be checked OR pass through security. This doesn't take long, but last time, I forgot and had to stand in line twice to check my bag. When you arrive at SIG, let the driver know your connection is tight.

Doug knows this better than anyone....take his advice. When we flew out on January 31, we did not do a FDA inspection. Didn't know about it and went straight to get boarding pass and straight through security....no FDA. You weren't carrying anything suspicious were you Doug ;)-

Peace out

Hi All,

You continue to all be sooo helpful. We tried changing our jet Blue flight to a later time but it would cost us an extra $550! So Nick & I re-grouped and decided to do just carry-on & cull down our packing gear.

My next question is can we get our boarding passes online or at a kiosk? If so, since we won't have to check-in luggage can we avoid the main counter & go straight to security? There's still the FDA possibility to deal with. I know with international, even though you can get your boarding pass in advance even w/ carry-on you still have to go to the main counter but not sure about PR.

Thanks for your help,
Michelle

There are kiosks at SJU, and if you aren't checking bags, you can procede to security. Very hard to find printers for public use on Culebra.

Herb, if you skated FDA, you were lucky; that's normally a must. No contraband here, though they are typically trying to prevent invasive species from hitch hiking to the states.

Things are looking better for us! Thanks, Doug for the info. We'll check with Esmeralda at Villa Flamenco where we're staying & see if she can print our boarding passes. If not, we'll do the kiosk. We just may make our flight! Of course, I don't want to obsess on our flights home to distract us from being in Paradise all week.

Unless things have changed, you can print at the library also. Carry-on is a good idea, one time Air Flamenco didn't get our luggage to the big island until their next flight, 6 hours later. We spent a harrowing few hours at Isla Grande waiting.

Thanks, Arroz. I'll see if they're open on Saturday since our flight home is Sunday. I'm sure Esmeralda at Villa Flamenco can help out, too.
We are sooo excited trying a new island for the 1st time. We're veteran travelers to St. Barts but want to try other places for variety & affordability.

When you get to SJU got straight to the Agricultural checking first. It's on the street side inside the airport, not going towards the check-in terminals. They need to check ALL bags and items carried and checked. No green sticker, no exit. As noted above, someone lucked out and they missed you. Then trek to the security line. It will be busy on Sun. Your preprinted boarding pass will help. Good luck.

And hope VAL doesn't do a Vieques or Ceiba drop off or pickup.

Good morning,
I live in Culebra (& for 5+ years prior elsewhere in the Caribbean but via SJU for the states) & always travel carry on only & have never done the ag. sticker thing for carryon.

Terrie, I just had them doing that to all of my carry on within the past month or two. It used to be just checked bags but in the past month they sent me back to Ag to get a sticker on all of my carry on. Maybe it's hit or miss but it stinks to get all the way to the front of the security line only to have them send you back to Ag. And I was just there last Friday and had to have all carry on checked. They said mainly no fruit can be flown back to the states. My key lime was fine but no apple or pears.

So, seems hit or miss to me. The best way to approach this is to plan for an inspection and be thankful if they say you don't need one. I got lucky.

Peace out

Hi All,
You have all had an impact on us to do just carry-on and your continued help on the AG check is much appreciated. We will be very prepared!
Mucho Grazias!

Hi again,
We are doing our last minute strategizing and getting more excited each day. We have a couple of more questions relative to this thread:

What is the taxi fare between Isla Grande and San Juan International?

What is the fastest route to the taxis once we land at Isa Grande?

Thanks for all of your help:)

taxi fare is ~$20. add a few bucks if more folks and bags. 20 min ride. Once you land in Grande get your bags and walk out the front door. cabs will be curbside.

Enjoy!
