Puerto Rican local life experience?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I am backpacking Puerto Rico just for a week. I booked my ticket for April today and not I realize that it is so short of a time because I want to live with locals and experience local life at Puerto Rico.

With this motive in mind, which would be the best place- San Juan, Culebra, Vieques or some other place?

If you like crowded places then San Juan will be the best bet to live with locals, you can go to Isla Verde area with hot beaches and quite nice life, stay away from Carolina at night. You probably like Condado where the Hotels, Convention Center and Casinos are is more Fun and great people. Hope this work.

Thanks for reply.

Well, I am interested in living with some Puerto Rican family and experience their routine life, farmer's market rather than Casino, tourist places or hotels for now.

Hello Viu,
As much as I love Culebra and Vieques, for an authentic Puerto Rican experience without tourists I would recommend you visit Ponce, a city on the south side of the big island.

I think you might have a problem finding a typical PR family nowadays. Do you want to meet a professions, e.g., dr. lawyer, a white collar worker, a blue collar, a farmer?

well, Puerto Rico isnt the outback or congo. Don;t expect to run into a primitive village. lol.
what you seem to be looking for is something like a "foriegn student exchange" or something similar. you can't just arrive in San Juan and expect to find a family that wants to take you in. thats crazy.
have you made any effort to contact anyone? April is just a few weeks away. and a week isnt enough time for what you want. sorry to be so pragmatic but your trip doesnt seem well planned

I understand what you saying Frank. May be my expectation was very crude but atleast I got an idea from what you said. Ya I have contacted some people on couch surfing but again they are also leading the similar life to what I am living today..hehehe

Ya I am not too planned, but I am ready to take whatever I get.
Thanks for your ideas..:)

My point is that there isn't a "typical" Puerto Rican Family. No more so than a typical California family or a typical Indiana family. If I were being cynical I might suggest that you are as likely to find a "typical PR family in New York city as in Puerto Rico LOL

a friend of mone has a casita on a hillside On Vieques. She is looking for a long term resident to watch over it and live in it.
it has nu plumbing or electricity, but its a very cool place.
it would be good for you, but she needs someone to be there long term.
