Bahia Marina 1BR vs. 2BR
Culebra, Puerto Rico

I have been given great rates for both the 1BR and 2BR condos at Bahia Marina. The 2BR rate is a little better on a shorter stay and we haven't decided how long we will stay yet. We are hoping for a month. The 2BR has a washer/dryer which is a big plus. Size wise either would do. It is hard to tell but in looking at pictures the 1BR buildings seem to have more ambiance as far as proximity to pool area and natural vegetation. The 2 BR buildings which I understand are newer appear to have sort of been thrown up in not as pretty of an area. I would greatly appreciate any and all input I could get on this issue as well as anything else anyone thinks I should consider about BH.

Thank you!

I'm not sure what you mean by the 2BR have been "thrown up in not as pretty of an area". They are on the same property; just down the hill a bit. Maybe the landscape doesn't look as pretty to you, as it's not as mature as the original buildings? You would walk down the hill to the large pool. You would walk up the hill to the restaurants and small pool. If you want it all in one small walking area, without going up/down hills, the 1BR would probably be a better choice. While the hills are paved, they are quite steep. Also, I think the property will drive you around by golf cart if you don't want to do the hills. I've never stayed there, but am a frequent restaurant/pool visitor.

PS - we have the same IP address. Where are you located in Georgia? We are in Chamblee.

Hi Debbie,

Thank you for the info! I think the more mature vegetation and the way the original buildings just seem a part of it is what really appeals to me. I have a troublesome knee so I'm thinking the steep hills are probably not a good idea. I will be traveling with my sister. We are finally taking the trip we have talked about for years. We enjoy meeting people and it seems the orignal buildings there are more in the center of everything at Bahia Marina and probably a great place to mingle with other travelers and get some good sightseeing tips. A big plus with the newer villas is that they have a washer/dryer. I have been told by the management that they do not have on site laundry facilities but they are available in town. Do you have any insight on laundry? I want to pack light so that will most likely be an issue.

I am in Forsyth county just north of Alpharetta. We are practically neighbors :~)

Hi Lynn. You will love Culebra! It is beautiful and so much fun to visit. We stayed at Bahia Marina in a 2 BR unit in March 2011. I agree with your concern about steep stairs in the 2 BR units. There are stairs to the pool, and also stairs to the restaurant. Our unit was on the 3rd floor, so there were also stairs to the unit. The 1 BR units are also in 2-3 levels. But, the ground floor level is on the same level as the restaurant and the pool. (there are 2 pools on the property). The restaurant is open for dinner and the food was delicious. On weekends, the lower pool serves lunch and drinks midday. Another consideration in your room choice is the view. From our living room, our 2 BR unit looked out over the swimming pool and a vegetated hillside. From the bedrooms, the views were of the adjacent condo. I didn't look into a 1 BR unit, but they appeared to have a view overlooking the bay. We had a washer and dryer in our bedroom and it was very helpful during our week stay. I found that clothing dried quickly, though, even when not placed in the dryer.

Thanks for all the great advice! I am just back from a working trip and need a vacation! We are still deciding what to do in January. I have a month off. I'm high energy. I need a vacation but I'm a little concerned that Culebra may be a little too much down time :~(

Whenever we can, my lady and I always go for the 2BR ..... the extra room is a "Play Room", which means we can make all the messes we want (which we usually do) and still have a sleep room that's comfy and non-trashed, if you catch my drift.

Good afternoon, I've been going to Puerto Rico for about 12 years now and I can't say how much I enjoy it each and everytime, however, this past July we decided to visit Culebra for the very first time. The island in itself is BEAUTIFUL and BREATHTAKING! ... as for Bahia Marina, I'm sorry I can't say the same. I found them to be unprepared, over priced and not attentive at all. Having visited PR for so many years now we've stayed at so many hotels and I haven't had to complain about the service or the people. This was not the case at Bahia Marina. I felt they were very understaffed and it was SO BORING at the hotel. No music and the "staff" at BH was so UNWELCOMING! Two things I love about PR is the food and the people, I can't say the same about BH. As for Culebra beach, BEAUTIFUL and very relaxing, if you don't rent a car to get to town, be prepared to wait for someone from BH to have time to take you or wait a good 20-30 minutes for a taxi. Hope you enjoy your trip!
