Culebrita
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hey all,

We're going to be there 20th - 27th. It's me and Steph and our three kids ages 10, 9, 7. As it's Holy Week we know it'll be relatively crowded Wed-Sunday, and we'll be there the following M-T as well. We want to do Culebrita and are wondering if a) we should go during Holy Week, and if so does anyone else want to share a water taxi over, or b) should we wait until M-T the following week when there's less crowd. Any advise is appreciated.

Many thanks!
Drew

Going during Holy Week is up to you and your family and what your expectations are. We made the trip to Culebrita in kayaks with 3 adults and two twelve year old girls. I was pretty excited thinking of getting to Playa Tortuga. However, I was disappointed when we made the hike to Tortuga after landing the kayaks on the south side of Culebrita. There were probably less than a dozen boats, but a good 50-60 people, partying, load music, lots of alcohol. Playa Tortuga was beautiful, but festivities polluted the experience. I just walked in the water, dove under, came up, walked out, and said, "Ok, let's leave!". We didn't spend more than 3 minutes there. We did hike to the lighthouse. That was great! Absolutely incredible views! We snorkeled on the reefs where we had beached the kayaks. Another incredible experience.

When we do it again, we will make it a point to visit Culebrita when there are fewer people, especially the party types. Playa Tortuga deserves another chance. I just need to time it right. For us, Culebrita is easily a 3 day adventure. It may be small, but it has a lot, both above and below the water.

Tim, thanks for the tip. Maybe we'll wait until the Monday after Easter, I do want to go to Culebrita badly but what a downer it would be to end up there with a big rowdy crowd.

Drew. Good luck with timing it right. There is a trail near the center of Playa Tortuga, in a group of 4-5 palms, that will take you to the east beach. It could make a nice side trip while on Culebrita. If you hike to the lighthouse, be sure and take enough water for everyone. The colder the better. It can be a hot dry hike up. Having some cool refreshing water will be very welcomed, taking your mind off the thirst and allowing you to enjoy the breath-taking views. And take your camera. We are still looking at the photos and wishing we were there.

Enjoy Culebra!

Tim

I will be on Culebra during time you are there. I would be interested in sharing a water taxi to Culebrita. How much is cost of taxi? Guess taxi goes over and drops off in morning and returns for pick up in evening? I've been to Culebra a number of times but neve to Culebrita so looking forward to exploring that island.
