Iguana hunters
Culebra, Puerto Rico

My young kids are big into biology/ecology. On our frequent trips to Culebra we've often seen iguanas, but they're relatively rare (unless eating at Mamacitas, obviously :). I'm wondering from the locals if there is a place to hike to with cameras to have the best shot of observing iguanas in their natural habitat. We'll be there next week and I know iguanas are a seasonal lot, so especially curious about this time of year. Along the trail to Brava?

I just got back from Culebra last week and there lots of iguanas. There was one in the parking lot at Playa Flamenco. Good luck, I think if you just walk around you'll find them.

Ha...thanks all.

That's the thing, we aren't looking for the Mamacitas brand of iguana, or the guys hanging out for scraps by the food stands. We're interested in hiking to where they might be more common on the island in their natural habitat, if there is such a place. Any locals on here know a good spot?

In Muneco, there is a house called Casita Iguana, because SO many iguanas hang out in that area. I see them around that area all the time. They hang out around water (there's a stream behind this particular house), and they love to munch on leaves and bask in the sunshine, so you should be able to find them in any area of the island with these characteristics. The owners of Casita Iguana are quite nice, and if you asked, I bet they would let you visit. http://casitaiguana.com/

Happy Diving!

Hi Debbie, thanks so much. Casita Iguana looks great, we will stop by...bonus, we're always looking for places for guests and the Casita could be just the ticket!

Doug, we'll check out the flower gardens.

Other locals...with all this being well and good, I'm still wondering about spots in the wild, off the beaten path, places we can hike to, leaving nothing but footprints :)

I just returned from Culebra last week. There were iguanas everywhere- including some roadkill. I'd been to Culebra the previous year and not seen as many.

Try the road to Melones Beach- we always saw at least two coming and going.

It's very dry right now. They are likely out in search of water.

Happy Diving!
