Culebrita Day Trip?
Culebra, Puerto Rico

Hello!

Is it possible/worth it to take the ferry to Culebra and do a day trip to Culebrita? We're going the first week of April. What are the chances we would see turtles?

Is there an alternative to see turtles on the main island?

Can anyone recommend a good guide?

Thank you for your time!

We took a power cat (East Wind Excursions, I think) out of Fajardo for a day of snorkeling on Culebrita and Luis Pina Marine Preserve. You got beach time on Culebrita and we were able to hike down to the baths. You may or may not see turtles. It is usually hit and miss. Not worth it, in my opinion, to take the ferry to Culebra and then get someone to take you over to Culebrita.

Thanks! If we flew in, is it possible to do a day trip to driving to Resaca Beach and the preserve?

You cannot drive all the way to Resaca Beach. It is about a mile hike in to the beach, mostly downhill, so when you leave you have to climb back up. Resaca is absolutely beautiful and we had the beach to ourselves all day last spring. We would definitely go again, but also want to try Brava, which we understand is an easier hike. If you do go, take plenty of water, and keep in mind you will be hot and sweaty after the climb out.

Thanks for the info. We are experienced hikers. How long does the drive from the ferry or airport to the trail take and is it easy to find?

The drive from the airport to the top of the hill at Resaca is less than a mile. the hike down the hill is slow and over big rocks. May be grown in with all of the rain last year. The drive to Brava is a few miles. Head East and then take a left at the museum. head North until the pavement ends. Park on the side of the road. hike the path up the hill and then down. At the bottom take a right onto the beach (sometimes a little hard to find but you will hear the ocean pounding). Strong surf and currents on the Northern beaches. Brava has a cool rock formation at the West end and a little island there. I liked Brava better but they are both very nice. If the surf is heavy you may not even be able to get out to swim and it has a steep shore break so the waves sort of break right at the shore like in Waimea Bay. Enjoy!
